The World Bank will convene an international conference, co-financed by UK AID/DfID, on “Poverty and Social Inclusion in the Western Balkans” to be held in Brussels on December 8th and 9th, 2010.
Eligibility
* Graduate Students or Fellows from institutions in the Western Balkans Countries (Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Kosovo, Montenegro and Serbia)
The objective of the conference
– to bring together leading academics and researchers from European Member States, the six countries of the Western Balkans and international organizations active in the area of combating poverty and social exclusion to:
* Showcase recent policy research on poverty and social inclusion in the Western Balkans;
* Promote dialogue between academics and policy makers and identify priorities for the future research agenda on poverty and inclusion;
* Encourage collaboration between researchers in EU Member States and Candidate and Potential Candidate countries, with a view to the formation of research networks
that could be leveraged in the future to apply for EU funding.
We encourage the submission of innovative papers or proposals for round table discussions related to the topic, particularly on:
* Poverty, Inequality and Social Exclusion
* Migration
* Social Protection
* Gender
* Labor and Poverty in the Western Balkans
* The Impact of Policy Reforms on Poverty
* The Impact of the Crisis on the Western Balkans Countries
* Poverty, Agriculture, and Rural Development
Cost
Participation in the conference is free of charge. The organizer will provide coffee and lunch breaks, as well as the conference dinner.
Grant
Applications are invited from Graduate Students, or Fellows from institutions in the Western Balkans Countries who plan to present a paper at the Conference. A limited number of grants will be awarded based on merit and financial need, and subject to availability of funds. These grants could partially refund the cost of travel or accommodation.
Application procedure
All interested applicants should submit following documents:
1. Abstract (300 words)
2. Applicant’s name, postal address, e-mail address, and phone number.
3. Title of the paper to be presented at the conference and names of co-authors.
4. Applicant’s current status, department and institution of enrollment, current degree program.
5. Brief resume of the research area, and anticipated graduation date.
