Description

The European University Institute (EUI) offers one of Europe’s most distinguished graduate programmes in the social sciences.

Located near Florence, Italy, the Institute is unique in its European, comparative and interdisciplinary focus. It offers up to four years’ scholarship to research students leading to an internationally recognised doctorate in Economics, History, Law or Political & Social Sciences.

The efficient mix of coursework, seminars, research and student supervision enables more than 80% of the candidates to complete their degrees in less than four years.

The EUI prepares researchers for developing and defending a doctoral thesis.

160 research grants are awarded annually by the EU Member States and other European national authorities to successful candidates.

Programme Structure:

  • Year 1: Acquire a solid background for the doctoral work; set out the proposed research.
  • Years 2 and 3: Research, field work, data collection, writing of the thesis under close supervision.
  • Year 4: Writing up and preparation for the defence of the thesis. Part of the year may be used for professional or university traineeships or teaching opportunities

A Ph.D. from the European University Institute is an internationally recognised qualification.

Eligibility

You must meet the minimum degree requirements set by the national grant authorities by the beginning of the academic year for which you have applied. If you are a national of Latin America, you must have graduated at the time of applying. The annual deadline for applying is 31 January.

  • Austria: completion of university studies (Magister-Grad)
  • Belgium: maîtrise or master (economics), or licence with distinction
  • Cyprus: Ptychion or equivalent degree
  • Denmark: kandidateksamen
  • Finland: ylempi korkeakoulututkinto/högre högskoleexamen, equivalent foreign degree
  • France: DEA (or Master) or equivalent to bac + 5
  • Germany: completion of university studies and the qualifications required to study for a doctorate
  • Greece: ptychion
  • Italy: laurea (vecchio ordinamento); laurea specialistica /Masters (nuovo ordiinamento)
  • Netherlands: doctoraal examen or Master’s degree
  • Norway: Master’s degree or Cand.Philol, Cand.Polit, Cand.Oecon., Cand.Sociol., or Cand.Jur.
  • Poland: Magister, Magister inzynier lub inny równorzedny
  • Portugal: licenciatura and qualifications required to study for a doctorate in Portugal
  • Spain: licenciatura
  • Sweden: kandidatexamen and the qualifications required to study for a doctorate
  • Switzerland: licence/diplôme or master
  • UK & Ireland: good honours degree (min. Upper Second); preference to those with a Master’s degree
  • Latin American countries: licenciatura
  • Other countries: diploma equivalent to the minimum qualification needed to study for a doctorate in a given country

1. Read the Admission Requirements.
2. Before starting your online submission, prepare the required attachments as specified:

  • CV which should also include a list and brief description of selected advance courses you have taken: the content (main topics, professors, textbooks) of advanced undergraduate/Master courses taken in economics, mathematics and statistics (electronic size max 400 KB)
  • Degree transcript, preferably in English, issued by your university listing the exams/courses taken at university, grades/marks awarded and (if applicable) the final degree result. Submit your transcript as a scanned file.  Do not attach or send supplementary documents that are not strictly requested, such us the copy of your official diploma, language certificates, traineeships diplomas etc. (electronic size max 800 KB)
  • Research Statement in English containing a brief (no more than 2 pages) description of relevant past and ongoing research (e.g. master or undergraduate thesis) and future research plans
  • GRE general test scores (recommended but not obligatory): See information on how you can take the test at http://www.ets.org/gre

3. Fill in the ONLINE APPLICATION FORM

Applicants should provide the names of 3 academic referees and ensure that three letters of reference are sent directly by the referees using the on-line form by the 31 January deadline.

References from current full-time or part-time EUI professors will not be accepted except where the professor is in a different EUI department from that applied to by the candidate, but who is able to comment on the academic qualities of the candidate.

Application Procedure : Law, History and Civilization, Political and Social Sciences:

  • a one-page CV (electronic size max 400 KB)
  • a research proposal of 4-5 pages in English or French, focused on a research theme dealt with by the Department of choice. It should state the scope, objectives, the reasons for, background and the state of the art in the field (with references to the literature), methodology, hypotheses/theories, a description of the empirical component and sources and a short bibliography. The EUI does not offer individual guidance on research proposals. You are advised to consult the Research Themes webpage.
  • a degree transcript, issued by your university or a personal declaration  listing the exams/courses taken at university, grades/marks awarded and (if applicable) the final degree result (electronic size max 800 KB). Submit your transcript as a scanned file or attach your personal declaration to the on-line application.  Do not attach or send supplementary documents that are not strictly requested, such us the copy of your official diploma, language certificates, traineeships diplomas etc.

For countries where grant agreements are in place the application for admission to the EUI doctoral programme is automatically an application for a national grant.

Exceptions are as follows.  If you apply for a grant from one of these countries, your application to the EUI can ONLY be accepted if you apply also for the national grant by the deadline specified by the relevant grant authority. Click on the country link for further details.
