Thomson Reuters Foundation, in partnership with the European Forum Alpbach and with the support of the National Endowment for Democracy, will run a reporting workshop, ‘Diversity and Resilience in a Rapidly Changing World’ for ten journalists from Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) EU member states at the European Alpbach Forum from the 25th-31st August.

During the programme, participants will be able to examine the relationship between ‘Diversity and Resilience’ together with a host of experts from the worlds of business, politics, culture and civil society.

Each year, the forum brings together thinkers from across the generational and ideological divide in Europe to network and explore the challenges and potential solutions. Since it was established in 1945, the Forum has welcomed speakers such as Theodor W. Adorno, Karl Popper, Indira Gandhi, Friedrich von Hayek, Hans Kelsen, Ban Ki-Moon (who will participate in 2018 again), Jeffrey Sachs, Saskia Sassen, Yannis Varoufakis.  This year, the following speakers will take part: Joseph Stiglitz, Talia Sasson, Anya Schiffrin, Eric Rosenbach and Stephen Sackur.

Eligibility

  • Professional journalists from Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) EU member states are eligible. Possible countries are: Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia;
  • Journalists working in any medium may apply – print, radio, TV, online;
  • Looking for 10 journalists with a minimum of one year’s experience in the profession;
  • You should either be working full-time for a media organization, or a freelancer whose main work is journalism;
  • Participants will commit to writing one article that will be published in their media (regional, national language).

Benefits

The Foundation will cover the visa, travel, accommodation costs and participation fee of journalists participating in this programme.

When applying you will be asked to upload the following documents – please have these ready:

  • 2 work samples (maximum file size 5 MB);
  • A letter from your editor consenting to your participation in the programme and committing to publish/broadcast at least one story.

In the case of freelancers, your application should be accompanied by a letter from a media house that publishes your work and expresses interest in publishing or broadcasting a piece from the Forum.
