Fellowships to Attend Women Symposium in USA

Open to: women journalists strating the career; with professional experience; from underrepresented groups and/or with an innovative journalism project
Venue: 28 – 30 October, Roanoke, Virginia, USA


The Journalism and Women Symposium (JAWS) offers fellowships that cover travel and registration to the JAWS Conference and Mentoring Project (CAMP), for three days of training, networking and professional development. This year’s JAWS CAMP will take place 28 to 30 October in Roanoke, Virginia.

4 Fellowships are available respectively:

  1. Emerging Journalist Fellowship: selects 10 women who are just starting careers;
  2. Next Step Fellowship is aimed at veteran journalists;
  3. Diversity Fellowship seeks journalists who are traditionally underrepresented in newsrooms, including but not limited to women of color, journalists in the LGBTQ community and those with disabilities;
  4. Entrepreneurial Fellowship helps a woman journalist move forward with an innovative journalism project.


  • Women journalists;
  • From all around the world;
  • With at least one but no more than five years of professional journalism.


  • Winners are selected based on a combination of merit, financial need and their potential contribution to JAWS;
  • Fellowships cover CAMP registration and travel expenses.

How to apply?

In order to apply, please create a one-time, free account HERE and complete the online application, which includes:

  1. A one-page résumé;
  2. Samples of your professional, published work in journalism;
  3. A word document with brief descriptions of your submitted samples and links to them;
  4. Personal Statement– Why is an organization like JAWS important to you? etc.;
  5. One letter of recommendation (except of Next Step Fellowship)
  6. Pitch of up to 500 words that describes your project and your planned next steps and an explanation of the project’s financial viability (Entrepreneurship Fellowship).
