2 PhD Positions in Analysis at Korteweg-de Vries Institute in the Netherlands

Deadline: 31 March 2016
Open to: holders of MSc degree in mathematics
Scholarship: EUR 2,174 to 2,779 gross per month

Description

The Korteweg-de Vries Instituut voor Wiskunde (KdV Institute) is the mathematical research institute of the Faculty of Science of the Universiteit van Amsterdam. The KdV Institute offers two new PhD positions in analysis, under supervision of prof. Ale Jan Homburg and dr. Han Peters. The research concerns low dimensional real and complex dynamical systems, with an emphasis on skew products and iterated function systems.

  • Project I, funded by an NWO Top grant, concerns the stability set for two-dimensional complex dynamical systems;
  • Project II is funded by a grant from the NWO cluster for Non-linear Dynamics and Natural Systems.

Candidates can apply to either one or both projects. When applying for both projects, the candidates should mention whether there is a preference for one of the projects.

The starting date of project is no later than 1 September 2016 for project  I and no later than 1 August 2016 for project II.

Eligibility

For both positions the candidates are expected to hold a MSc degree in mathematics. A strong background in analysis, and in particular in dynamical systems and/or complex analysis, is a plus.

Scholarship

The appointment will be on a temporary basis for a period of 4 years (initial appointment will be for a period of 18 months and after satisfactory evaluation it can be extended for a total duration of 4 years) and should lead to a dissertation (PhD thesis). An educational plan will be drafted that includes attendance of courses and (international) meetings. The PhD candidate is also expected to assist in teaching of undergraduates.

Based on a full-time appointment (38 hours per week) the gross monthly salary will range from EUR 2,174 in the first year to EUR 2,779 in the last year. The Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities is applicable.

The application should include:

  • A letter of motivation;
  • A CV;
  • A list of taken courses with grades;
  • Copies of the bachelor and master theses (or drafts of it) as well as any other possible research-style outputs.

Completed applications should be submitted by 31 March 2016 via application-science@uva.nl and should state your name and vacancy number 16-056 in the subject field.
