Fellowships in CEU Institute for Advanced Study

The Central European University Institute for Advanced Study (CEU IAS) is pleased to invite applications for its fellowships for the academic year 2015/16.  CEU IAS fellows spend 6-10 months in Budapest and pursue their own research in the lively intellectual community of the other fellows, the university and the city of Budapest.  CEU IAS fellowships are highly competitive with an acceptance rate below 10%.

Calls are open for the following fellowships:

1. Senior And Junior Core Fellowships (15 fellowships)

Fellowships are available in all research areas of the social sciences and humanities, broadly defined.

Fellowships run for:

  • the full 9-month period (Oct-June);
  • the 3-month “short fall semester”;
  • the 5-months “long fall semester” (Oct-February) or
  • the 6-month spring semester (Jan-June).

2. Humanities Initiative Junior Fellowships (2 fellowships)

Humanities Initiative Fellows are expected to spend the 10-month academic year in Budapest, shorter terms are not allowed. They are expected to work on their own research project as junior fellows at the Institute for Advanced Study in two of the semesters and teach 4 credits’ worth of courses at the university in one semester.

3. Thyssen@CEU IAS Fellowships (2 fellowships)

Fellowships are available in all research areas of the social sciences and humanities.

Fellowships run for:

  • the whole academic year (10 months, September 1- June 30), or
  • the Fall or Winter semesters (6 months, Sept 1 to Feb 28 or Jan 1 to June 30).

You may apply for all or any of the fellowships at the same time but the application process and the requirements are not the same. Please read the calls carefully.

Eligibility

Applicants must hold a Ph.D. or equivalent in the social sciences or humanities at the time of their application or by the time of starting the fellowship. The requirements vary depending on the fellowship.

Fellowship

The fellowship amount ranges according to the fellowship type from 1,400/1,500 Eur monthly for Junior fellows to 2,500 Eur monthly for Senior fellows to help support their stay in Budapest.  In addition, the fellows and their families receive housing at the Raoul Wallenberg Guesthouse. Utilities at the Guesthouse will be charged to the Fellows. Fellows are also responsible for their own travel and health care provisions.
