Dutch Design Competition USA 2014

Deadline: 7 March 2014
Open to: professional or amateur designers from across the world, but Dutch and Americans are encouraged
Award: a one-week in-house residency at the 3D-company Shapeways in New York

Description

Inspired by the exhibition, “Out of Hand: Materializing the Postdigital” at New York’s Museum of Arts and Design, and the sizable group of Dutch designers participating in the exhibit, the Netherlands Embassy in Washington, D.C. and the Consulate General in New York are holding a Dutch Design Competition in partnership with Kikkerland Design Inc. and Shapeways.

The Dutch government is looking for a new giveaway to distribute in the United States, and is inviting designers to submit inventive, quirky and smart ideas for a functional and affordable small item inspired by Dutch Design.

The Netherlands is defined by its innovative spirit and entrepreneurship in the arts and design industries. Creative ingenuity is an essential part of our nature. Being Dutch inherently means pushing boundaries when tackling problems. Like Americans, Dutch people value new ideas and enjoy exploring them. With centuries of cutting-edge arts and culture in our history, the Dutch are known for our high commitment to quality and our pragmatic approach.

Eligibility

Participation in this Design Competition is free of charge and open to everyone. Participants do not have to be professional designers. One design can be submitted by more than one person, in which case the design will be considered as one submission.

The organizers hope that Dutch designers, US designers inspired by Dutch Design, as well as special teams of Dutch and US designers will participate.

Award

The 10 best designs will be nominated from the submitted designs. The 10 nominated designs will be printed in 3D format and exhibited in New York. They will also be published on the Internet, on the official website, and via social media.

The winning design will be selected out of the 10 nominated designs. The winning design will be brought into production in an amount of around 500 and purchased by the Netherlands Embassy and the Consulates General in the USA for the purpose of a gift to be given away to important contacts in the United States. Kikkerland plans to offer the winning design (worldwide) via its website to the benefit of the designer. The designer of the winning design shall further be offered a one-week in-house residency at the 3D-company Shapeways in New York. Travel costs and costs of accommodation included.
