Description

The Amsterdam Institute for Social Science Research (AISSR) unites all social science research of the University of Amsterdam. The research programme focuses on the functioning of contemporary societies and their interrelationships from historical, comparative and empirical perspectives. They are currently offering several PhD Fellowships for eligible candidates.

1. PhD Fellowship in Political Science at the Faculty of Social & Behavioural Sciences

The PhD project is part of a grant financed by the U.S. Department of Defense Minerva Initiative for the project ‘Political Reach, State Fragility, and the Incidence of Maritime Piracy and Pirate Organizations, 1993-2012.’ The project proposes new theoretical explanations of maritime piracy, collects data on the incidence of piracy and the characteristics of pirate organizations, and uses advanced quantitative methods to conduct empirical analyses.

The full-time appointment will be for a period of three years (12 months plus a further 24 months contingent on a satisfactory performance during the first year) at 38 hours per week, starting 1 January 2014. Salary will be €2,000 gross per month.

Eligibility

Candidates must possess a completed Master’s degree in political science, international relations, economics, development studies, or other related subject; and good skills in research methods, quantitative methods, and data management. Additional desirable qualifications include experience with Geographic Information Systems and a background in conflict research or the study of criminal organizations.

2. Four PhD candidates for research project Public-Private Security Assemblages

In cities across the world, people increasingly rely on a broad range of interconnected security providers: police, uniformed security guards, voluntary neighbourhood watches, or armed vigilantes. These different actors, who both compete and collaborate in securing urban spaces and populations, are central to public-private ‘security assemblages’. The PhD candidates will be based in Amsterdam and conduct up to twelve months of fieldwork in one of the following cities: Jerusalem, Miami, Nairobi or Recife.

The candidate’s tasks will include: conducting focused ethnographic field research, possibly including quantitative survey research; writing and completing a PhD dissertation within four years; participating in the AISSR or CERES PhD program; 10% teaching; collaborating with supervisors and peers in research and publications; and participating in conferences, workshops, seminars and other scholarly activities.

Salary will be €2,083 to €2,664 gross per month, based on 38 hours per week. The starting date for the appointment will be 1 February 2014. The full-time appointment is initially for a period of one year; contingent on satisfactory performance it will be extended by a maximum of three additional years leading to the completion of a PhD. 

Eligibility

PhD candidates should have the following credentials: a Master’s degree in a social science discipline such as anthropology, human geography or sociology; relevant fieldwork experience; ideally in Jerusalem, Miami, Nairobi or Recife and/or on topics related to security, crime, citizenship and governance. Ethnographic experience is considered an advantage; excellent written and spoken English; linguistic skills relevant to the research location; and ability and interest to work in a team.

3. PhD candidate for research project Visual Culture and Criminal Iconization

The PhD position is part of the NWO research project ‘The Popular Culture of Illegality: Criminal Authority and the Politics of Aesthetics in Latin America and the Caribbean’. This project will study the popular music, visual culture and material culture through which the socio‐political authority of criminal organizations is produced.

The candidate’s tasks will include: conducting focused visual analysis in concert with ethnographic methods; writing and completing a PhD dissertation within four years; participating in the AISSR or CERES PhD program;10% teaching; collaborating with supervisors and peers in research and publications; participating in conferences, workshops, seminars and other scholarly activities.

Salary will be €2,083 to €2,664 gross per month, based on 38 hours per week. The starting date for the appointment will be 1 February 2014.
