Call for Papers: Designing Politics for Development

Deadline: 25 October 2013
Open to: professionals of academia, think tanks, social movements and interest groups, public service or private sector
Prize: 1,500 EUR

Description

The International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA) is an intergovernmental organization established in 1995, with member states across all continents. International IDEA aims to support sustainable democracy worldwide and assists in the development of institutions and the culture of democracy.

International IDEA calls for submission of papers that should critically discuss current debates in the particular fields (see topics below), exposing arguments and using empirical cases as support. At the same time, the approach has to be pragmatic and policy-oriented rather than rigorously academic. Further, the papers should strive to use real experiences from one to three countries in a region of the Global South (Asia and the Pacific, Middle East and North Africa, Latin America, Carribean and Sub-Saharan Africa) on how design of political reports, political processes and political institutions resulted in positive development outcomes in terms of economic growth, service delivery and social-economic development.

The papers will address one of the following topics:

  • Extractive Industries
  • Millennium development goals (MDGs) and the post 2015 debate
  • From fragility to sustainable development
  • Democratic accountability
  • People-powered and non-violent social movements
  • Fostering inclusive societies through employment

Eligibility

Professionals of academia, think tanks, social movements and interest groups, public service or private sector are equally welcome to apply.

Prize

An International IDEA panel, inclusive of anonymous external peer reviewers, will select the best abstracts to be awarded contracts to write papers, which could also be included in a future publication. Selected authors will be paid 1 500 Euros per paper inclusive of social security fees/VAT, as applicable.

Application

Those interested in submitting a paper should develop an abstract (maximum 500 words), which outlines ideas for a paper within the above framework. The abstract should be written in English and with maximum length of 2 pages long in Microsoft Word format (Arial font, size 11, single space). It should be emailed to h.ivarature@idea.int and copied to a.fernandez@idea.int no later than 25 October 2013 12 p.m. CET Time. Please attach your brief CV, including current professional affiliation, at least two references in relation to similar assignments, and your contact information.

Those succeeding to have their abstracts selected by International IDEA will be notified no later than 4 November and requested to submit a draft by 18 November and the full paper by 11 December 2013. The final paper should be around 6,000 – 7,000 words, excluding references. The deadline for the final submission is 11 December 2013.

For further information, please contact Dr. Henry Ivarature, Senior Programme Officer (h.ivarature@idea.int), Ms Helena Bjuremalm, Senior Programme Manager (h.bjuremalm@idea.int) or Alberto Fernandez, Assistant Programme Officer (a.fernandez@idea.int).
