IAS-Paris Fellowship in Humanities and Social Sciences

Deadline: 20 January 2012
Open to: Established senior researchers in the humanities and social sciences
Scholarship: Fellowships of nine or five months

Description

IAS-Paris was conceived in 2007 as an initiative of Fondation Maison des Sciences de l’Homme (FMSH), École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (EHESS) and École Normale Supérieure (ENS), which joined together to create an Institute for Advanced Study to host high-level humanities and social science researchers in Paris. From the outset, this project benefited from the French Ministry of Research’s creation of RFIEA (the French network of institutes for advanced studies in humanities and the social sciences), which is one of thirteen thematic networks for advanced research (RTRA) approved by the French State in 2006. RFIEA includes the Institutes for Advanced Study in Lyon, Marseille and Nantes.

Under the impetus of Yves Duroux, IAS-Paris welcomed its first fellows in March 2008. From 2008 until 2010, the Institute was managed by a scientific executive committee made up of Jean-Luc Racine (FMSH), Michael Werner (EHESS) and Frédéric Worms (ENS), assisted by Jean-Luc Lory (FMSH) as Secretary General. Fifty-two researchers from all corners of the globe became involved in multidisciplinary research, while others took part in the Institute’s scientific activities: colloquia, seminars and meetings. Twenty-one new fellows have already received invitations to IAS-Paris for the academic year 2011-2012 and eight fellows for 2012-2013.

Eligibility

The IAS-Paris general programme offers residential research fellowships of nine or five months to established senior researchers (Professors, Associate Professors…) in the humanities and social sciences. They may apply:

  • either for the entire academic year (9-month research stays, October through June)
  • or for one semester (5-month stays, September through January, February through June).

Promising scholars at an early stage of their career are also eligible. However, at the time of the application, they must:

  • be in possession of a PhD degree for at least three years
  • have at least three years of research experience, full-time equivalent
  • hold an academic or research position (Assistant Professor or equivalent).

As a rule, the postdoctoral activities of the candidate is an important criterion for assessing the receivability of his or her application.

Applicants residing, or having resided, in one of three French IAS (Lyon, Marseille, Nantes) are not eligible.

Nationality
Researchers from all countries are eligible. However, they cannot apply for the Paris Institute if they reside in metropolitan France, were they French or from other countries.

Disciplines
The programme is open to all disciplines in the fields of the humanities and social sciences (HSS). Multi- or transdisciplinary applications at the frontiers of life and exact sciences with a HSS component are also accepted, provided that the research project does not require laboratory or access to specific facilities.

Application

Candidates apply through the online application system. Paper applications are not accepted.

To access the online application system, please create an account (“user account”) and follow the procedure. After the registration of your account, you will have to fill in an application form and to upload the relevant documents, in English or in French.

  • The completed IAS-Paris application form
  • CV & list of publications (up to 20 pages)
  • A detailed project proposal (7500-15000 characters/1000-2000 words), including:

    – details on existing or envisaged academic connexions in France
  • Two summaries, in English and in French, of 1500 characters/200 words maximum, including the title of the project.

Each application is initially reviewed by the IEA-Paris direction, which forwards approved application files to external experts for assessment. On the basis of the scientific evaluation made by the experts, the direction proposes a short-list of fellows to the IEA-Paris international Scientific Board for a final opinion.
