Finnish Literature Information Centre (FILI) Translation Grants

Description

Each year FILI awards 500,000 € in translation and printing grants to more than 300 different projects. Numerous forms of funding are available, including grants for the translation of Finnish literature into other languages and for translation into Finnish.

Each year the advisory committee of the Information Centre awards translation grants for:

  • the translation of Finnish, Finland-Swedish and Saami language literature into other languages;
  • the translation of both fiction and non-fiction from abroad into Finnish;
  • the translation of academic publications and non-fiction into Swedish.

In addition to this FILI also awards travel grants to translators from abroad.

 

1. Translation Grants

FILI offers five different forms of funding. Foreign publishers may apply for funding for the translation of Finnish literature into other languages. Finnish publishers are awarded funding for the translation into Finnish and Swedish.

Finnish Literature into Other Languages 

Foreign publishers may apply for a grant for the translation of Finnish, Finland-Swedish and Sámi literature into other languages. Funding is awarded primarily for the translation of Finnish literature, though a number of grants are awarded for the translation of works of non-fiction dealing with aspects of Finnish culture. Each year FILI awards around 300,000 € in translation grants. Nordic publishers may apply for a grant for the translation of Finnish and Finland-Swedish literature into Nordic languages. Each year FILI awards around 60,000 € in such grants.

Finnish into Swedish

Finland-Swedish publishers and societies can apply for grants for the translation of literature and non-fiction from Finnish into Swedish. The translated work must, however, be published in Finland. Each year FILI awards around 80,000 € in such grants.

Sámi into Finnish

Finnish publishers may apply for a grant for the translation of Sámi literature into Finnish.

Foreign Literature into Finnish

Finnish publishers may apply for a grant for the translation of foreign literature into Finnish. Each year FILI awards around 115,000 € in such grants to non-commercial literature and non-fiction.

2. Printing Grants

Printing grants offer funding for the printing of Finland-Swedish manuscripts and Samí language literature. In addition to this foreign publishers may apply for funding to help with the costs of printing Finnish comics and children’s picture books in translation.

Swedish in Finland

Finland-Swedish publishers, societies and organisations may apply for grants to cover the cost of printing Finland-Swedish literary and non-fiction manuscripts. The printed work must be published in Finland.

Sámi and Eastern Finno-Ugric Literature into Finnish

Finnish publishers may apply for grants to cover the costs of printing Sámi language and Eastern Finno-Ugric literature in Finnish translation.

Children’s Picture Books into Other Languages

Foreign publishers may apply for grants to cover the costs of printing Finnish, Finland-Swedish and Sámi language children’s picture books translated into other languages.

Foreign publishers may apply for grants to cover the costs of printing Finnish, Finland-Swedish and Sámi language comics and graphic novels translated into other languages.

3. Other Grants

Foreign translators may apply to FILI for travel and sample translation grants. Sample translation grants are also awarded to foreign and Finnish publishers. Below is a selection of other literary funding bodies.

Travel Grants for Translators

Translators of Finnish literature may apply for travel grants to cover the costs of a work or study trip.

Translators and foreign and Finnish publishers can apply for a grant in order to produce a sample translation of a work of Finnish, Finland-Swedish or Sámi literature.
