The Institute for Advanced Studies (IHS) is one of Austria’s postgraduate research and training institute in the disciplines of political science, sociology, economics and finance.

The Department of Political Science focuses on the comparative study of the European integration process and its impact on Member States’ representative structures and institutions. Within this broad field of European Politics, current research by members of the Department revolves around various aspects of party politics, including party patronage, political presentation and the linkage between principals and agents, right-populist parties  and European integration, and new forms of representation beyond the nation state. A second, new pillar of the Department’s research concerns the EU’s role in International Relations: how does the EU aggregate, implement and secure its interests on the international stage.


* research in the field of European Politics
* publishing in  peer-reviewed journals and with international publishing houses
* acquisition and management of research projects
* postgraduate teaching and supervision of students participating in postgraduate programme
* organisation and management of various Departmental activities (visiting professors, seminars, conferences, working paper series etc.)


* a relevant PhD./Doctorate in political science (strong legal background encouraged),
* a proven record of published research of an excellent international standard, and of lectures
and conference presentations
* international experience in research and teaching is considered as an asset
* excellent spoken and written English, ideally also German (a basic command of the German language should be acquired within the first year of appointment)
* very good methodological and theoretical knowledge of political science in general, and of European politics in particular
