The Open Society Institute (OSI) announces an open position for Research Assistant in the OSI-Washington, D.C., office. The duration of the job position is from May to December 2010.

The Open Society Institute works to build vibrant and tolerant democracies whose governments are accountable to their citizens. To achieve its mission, OSI seeks to shape public policies that assure greater fairness in political, legal, and economic systems and safeguard fundamental rights. On a local level, OSI implements a range of initiatives to advance justice, education, public health, and independent media. At the same time, OSI builds alliances across borders and continents on issues such as corruption and freedom of information. OSI places a high priority on protecting and improving the lives of marginalized people and communities.

Responsibilities
Working under the supervision of the senior advisor, the research assistant will be available 25 hours per week and provide support on the following tasks:
* Provide a range of research activities and writing short informational and analytical reports;
* Attend relevant meetings hosted by nongovernmental organizations, government briefings, congressional hearings and write summary reports;
* Assist the senior adviser with special projects as they arise (the research assistant will assist in work leading up to establishing a Commission on Accountability).

Qualifications
* Graduate student pursuing a degree in international affairs or other relevant field;
* Previous office or related experience;
* High level of computer skills, including Microsoft Word/Outlook 2003 and web searching;
* Pleasant, diplomatic manner and disposition when interacting with program management, colleagues at all levels, external contacts and the general public;
* Integrity, professional discretion and ability to handle confidential matters;
* Availability to work 25 hours per week;
* Excellent writing and research abilities.

Compensation
Hourly rate commensurate with experience.
