portologoThe University of Porto is largest Portuguese university according to the number of students. It has one of the most noted research outputs in Portugal. It is a public university located in Porto and founded in 22 March 1911. Initially, the University was composed by three different faculties: Faculty of Mathematical, Physics, Chemical, Historical and Natural Sciences (including the Engineering School); Faculty of Medicine (including the Pharmaceutical School); Faculty of Trade (never implemented).
Currently around 28,000 students, 11,000 of which are postgraduate, attend the courses provided by the U.Porto’s fifteen schools (13 faculties, a biomedical sciences institute and a business school).

Studying

University of Porto offers 63 graduate degree courses, over 160 master courses, and several doctoral degree courses and other specialization courses, supported by 2300 lecturers and a technical and administrative staff of over 1600 people.
In 2007, a Higher Education Evaluation & Accreditation Council of Taiwan’s ranking, placed the University of Porto in 459. It was the only Portuguese university in the top 500 according to the Taiwanese ranking.

The University buildings are placed in three main sites: in the city centre — where the neoclassical building of architect Carlos Amarante is; Site 2 is a campus in the northern end of Porto; and site 3 (Campo Alegre) is in the western part of the city, over the river Douro bank. A number of other institutes and centers are scattered all over the city and even beyond its limits.

Education, Training and Research Programmes

University of Porto offers various mobility opportunities, by participating in several EU and non-EU education, training and research programmes.
This University participates in the EU Lifelong Learning Programme (LLP). It has 4 sub-programmes focused on different stages of education and training: Erasmus (higher education), Leonardo da Vinci (training and vocational education), Comenius (schools) and Grundtvig (adult education).

The U.Porto also takes part in other EU Programmes such as Erasmus Mundus, Tempus, Edulink, etc.

Other non-EU programmes in which U.Porto participates are Atlantis, EU-Canada, Fulbright, etc.
