At the beginning of the 21st century methodological nationalism and other forms of essentialism are becoming obsolete. Recent unprecedented transnational and cosmopolitan movements have challenged the perspectives derived in the past. The conference will stimulate discussions of manifold faces of essentialism, from criticism of methodological nationalism, culturalism and other forms of constructed collectivities, and will also search for alternatives in anthropology.

The conference will be divided into three streams:
1.Past – The Legacy of Continental Ethnologies and Global Anthropologies
Workshops:
– The Development of Slovenian and European Ethnology and Social/Cultural Anthropology in the Light of National and (Post-)Colonial Projects
– Social Memory and Heritage
– Understanding Belief Narratives (fokloristics)

2. Present – Local Practices and Cosmopolitan Reflexivity
Workshops:
– Cultures and World-Systems
– Space and Locality in Cosmopolitan and Transnational Perspectives
– Beyond Methodological Essentialism – Popular Research Strategies

3. Future – Technology, Ecology, Health
Workshops:
– The Applicability of Useless Endeavours: The Practicability of Anthropology
– Natures and Societies
– Beyond Dualisms: Discourses on Body, Health and Illness).

Conference fee (is payable at registration)
* EUR 60 (students, unemployed, professionals from disadvantaged countries)
* EUR 90 (all others)

Submission procedure
All interested participants should submit proposals including the author’s name, institutional affiliations, title and an abstract of up to 300 words.
The proposal should be submitted before 15th July 2010 to: eikaconference@ff.uni-lj.si
