Description

OpenNews is a collaboration between the Knight Foundation and Mozilla that’s dedicated to building an ecosystem to help journalism thrive on the open web. It’s about producing next-generation web solutions that solve real problems in news. It’s about supporting communities of developers and journalists as they make, learn, and invent together. And it’s about deploying fellows—and code—into news organizations to collaborate and innovate in new ways.

Knight-Mozilla Fellows experience the day-to-day energy of some of the best newsrooms in the world: being present as news breaks, writing code for the day’s headlines, wrangling thorny datasets, and taking a step back to solve real-world journalistic problems. Fellows’ work is rooted in developing projects that help us better understand our world.

2014 Fellowships begin in calendar year 2014 (January/February) and last for 10 months. Fellows are based, unless special circumstances dictate, in the town of their host news organization. In 2014, the Fellows will be based with:

  • The New York Times
  • ProPublica in New York
  • The Texas Tribune in Austin, Texas
  • La Nacion in Buenos Aires
  • and a joint fellowship with Ushahidi and Internews Kenya

Eligibility

The Knight-Mozilla Fellowship program is designed specifically to engage developers, hackers, engineers, technologists, data crunchers, and other people who like to code and bring them into the newsroom as Fellows. If you have a knack for coding and an interest in contributing your skills to journalistic projects, you should apply. Women and other under-represented participants in technology are strongly encouraged to apply for a Knight-Mozilla Fellowship.

Remuneration

The standard Fellowship offers a stipend of $60,000, paid in 10 monthly installments.  Fellowship also provides supplements for housing, childcare, health insurance, moving expenses, and helps pay for research/equipment and books. The Fellowship also covers the costs of required travel for Fellowship activities.

Application

The Fellowship application closes on 17 August 2013. All applications will be reviewed by a small reviewing panel. By early September, a final batch of 20-30 semifinalists will be selected and interviews conducted. Finalists will be notified by early October and a public announcement of our 2014 fellows will be made at the Mozilla Festival in London October 25, 2013.
