Czech Government Scholarships for Developing Countries

Deadline: Each country has its own specific deadline
Open to: Students of developing countries (out of European Union)
Scholarship: 12.000 CZK – 14.500 CZK (480 – 580 Eur)/month

Description

The Government of the Czech Republic offers scholarships within the framework of its Foreign Development Assistance in support of the study of foreign nationals from developing countries at public institutions of higher education in the Czech Republic.
These so called Government Scholarships are designed to cover the standard length of study:

  1. in Bachelor/Master/Doctoral study programmes plus one-year preparatory course of the Czech language (which is combined with other field-specific training). Government scholarships of this category are awarded to graduates from upper secondary schools, or Bachelor’s/Master’s degree courses, as applicable, who can enrol only in study programmes in which instruction is given in the Czech language. Depending on the subject area, applicants are normally required to sit entrance examinations at the higher education institution concerned. Successful passing of entrance examinations constitutes a precondition for the scholarship award;
  2. in follow-up Master study programmes or Doctoral study programmes. Government scholarships of this category are awarded to graduates of Bachelor or Master study programmes, respectively, who enrol in study programmes with instruction in the English language.

Eligibility

  • Students may be admitted to study a Bachelor’s and Master’s study programme in the CR only if they have completed full secondary general education or full secondary vocational education corresponding to secondary education with a school-leaving examination (“maturitní zkouška”) in the CR.
  • Students may be admitted to study a Master’s study programme that follows up on a Bachelor’s study programme only if they have duly completed their studies of a Bachelor’s study programme.
  • Students may be admitted to study a Doctoral study programme only if they have duly completed their studies of a Master’s study programme.
  • A scholarship of the Government of the CR for studies in the English language may only be granted if the student has a good command of English. If applicable, the applicant shall prove his/her English language knowledge by an internationally recognised certificate (e.g. TOEFL, IELTS, APIEL, etc.). If the applicant does not have the above certificate or if the submitted certificate has not been recognised by an official of the pertinent Mission of the CR abroad, the applicant for a scholarship of the Government of the CR shall sit an entry English language test in the course of his/her application submission.
  • Foreign nationals who have been granted permanent residence in the Czech Republic are not eligible to apply for the Government scholarships.

Scholarship

The scholarship covers necessary costs related to stay and study in the CR. The scholarship amount is regularly amended. Currently the amount paid to students of a Bachelor’s, Master’s or follow-up Master’s study programme stands at CZK 12,000 per month, whereas the amount paid to students of a Doctoral study programme stands at CZK 14,500 per month.
The scholarship amount already includes an amount designated for the payment of accommodation costs.
Costs of accommodation, food and public transport are covered by scholarship holders under the same conditions that apply to students who are citizens of the CR.
Should healthcare exceeding standard care be required by the student, s/he shall cover it at his/her own costs.
Travel expenses for travelling to the Czech Republic and back to the student’s homeland are paid by the party that has nominated the student to study in the CR or by the foreign national at his/her own costs.

Application procedure

  • Scholarship applications can only be filed on-line. The scholarship application form is available here. An application for a scholarship of the Government of the CR can only be submitted through a Diplomatic Mission of the Czech Republic in the given country. Here you can find the list of Czech Missions abroad.
  • The applicant shall deliver a filled in application form to the Mission in electronic form. If the application has been accepted and may proceed to the next round of the selection procedure, the Mission shall ask the applicant to perform certain following tasks (i.e. sit an entry test, interview, English language test for students who wish to study a given study programme in the English language, etc.). The most successful applicants shall be asked to submit complete documentation by a given deadline that the Mission shall determine so as to ensure that proposals for scholarships to be granted in a new academic year are at the disposal of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic and the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports of the Czech Republic in Prague by 31 December of the year prior to the given academic year.
  • A limited number of scholarships are also offered to applicants from selected developing countries who submit their application for a scholarship of the Government of the CR through UNESCO. In this case the applicant shall enter UNESCO as the “Sending Organisation” in the application form.

Application deadline

The conditions for applying for Czech Government Scholarships awarded to students from Developing Countries differ for each country, meaning that each country’s Diplomatic Mission is responsible for setting the deadlines and informing the general public on the conditions of application.
For example  the deadline for Macedonia is set on Friday, November 30, 2012. Furthermore, the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports of the Czech Republic has allocated 4 scholarships for study in the Czech language only for students from the Republic of Macedonia. Scholarships for studying in English have not been allocated this year.

Detailed information on the terms and conditions of scholarship awards can be found in official “Guidelines for Granting Scholarships of the Government of the Czech Republic“.

In fact, information about Diplomatic Mission of the Czech Republic in Sri Lanka is not included in the list above. We advice you to contact Czech Consulate in Colombo (email: czech2006@sltnet.lk,czechsrilanka@gmail.com) and ask about eligibility and further information.

  12. Hi

I am from the Republic of Maldives and I was wondering if we are eligible (Maldivians are eligible for Czech scholarships). I do not see Maldives on the list of Czech Consulates or embassies and I don't think there is any Czech consulate office in the Maldives . Could you provide me the instructions on who to contact in this case.

    Thanks

    Nasru

    1. Dear Nasru,

Maybe you should check with the closest Czech consulate office to the Maldives (meaning are there such offices in the neighborhood countries). Also, please go through guidelines and the official website provided here in our post.

      Kind regards,
      Mladiinfo team

  13. Hello, I am citizen of Georgia but living in Prague. I m a freshman of Charles university. Studying Liberal arts and Humanities. I was wondering if I can apply for any of these scholarships which are refunded for students from developing countries ?

    Thanks in advance,
    George

    1. Dear George,

Please consider as well the last thing mentioned in our 'eligibility' section in the post: Foreign nationals who have been granted permanent residence in the Czech Republic are not eligible to apply for the Government scholarships. Yet, if this still doesn't apply for you, please check with the persons in charge whose contacts you can find on the official website.

      Kind regards,
      Mladiinfo team
