Kroc Fellowship at NPR for Recent College or Grad School Graduates, US

Deadline: 31 December 2010
Open to: recent graduates from college or grad school (mostly specialization in journalism)
Allowance: an annual stipend of more than $40,000

Goal

The NPR Kroc Fellowship was established to identify and develop a new generation of extraordinary journalists for the public radio system.

About the Fellowship

Three Kroc Fellows will be accepted into the program this year. The Fellowship begins in August 2011 and lasts one year. It includes a stipend of more than $40,000, plus benefits, which include paid vacation. Fellows will get rigorous, hands-on training in every aspect of public radio journalism — writing, reporting, producing and editing, for both radio and the Web. Each Fellow will rotate through various units at NPR, in both the News and Digital Media Divisions, receiving training at each stage from an experienced producer, editor, or reporter. Among other things, Fellows will learn how to pitch news stories, find sources, book interviews, report stories, and work in the studio. They will receive regular instruction in writing for radio and on-air performance, and they will work alongside some of the nation’s most respected reporters, producers and editors. The Fellows will spend most of their time at NPR headquarters in Washington, D.C., but each Fellow will also have an assignment at an NPR member station.

Eligibility

NPR is looking for a diverse pool of applicants who aspire to work in public radio. Applicants don’t have to be US nationals, but must have appropriate employment authorizations. Candidates must be just completing college or graduate school, or be out of school for one year or less as of December 31, 2010. They do not need journalism or radio experience, but must demonstrate exceptional potential and drive. PLEASE CLICK ON THE FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS FOR MORE INFORMATION.

Each Kroc Fellow will receive an annual stipend of more than $40,000, plus benefits, including medical insurance and up to three weeks paid vacation. The cost of housing is not included in the Fellowship. Kroc Fellows are expected to find their own lodging in Washington, though we will offer assistance in locating inexpensive apartments or houses to share.
