Description
The Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (Eidgenossiche Technische Hochschule – ETH Zurich), is inviting applications for Engineering for Development (E4D) doctoral scholarships and Visiting Student Grants.
Scholarships
The Engineering for Development (E4D) doctoral scholarships promote doctoral research for the benefit of underprivileged people in low-income countries. It awards two doctoral scholarships per year and promotes innovative projects that are directly relevant for improving the livelihoods of underprivileged people in low-income countries.
Visiting Student Grants
The ETH4D Visiting Student Grants aim at bringing a collaborating doctoral or master student from low and middle-income countries to ETH Zurich for a research stay of 2-3 months. The student will spend the exchange stay at an ETH partner laboratory to learn new methodologies, technics or develop his/her research project in a new academic setting. Moreover, she or he will expand her or his academic network.

The candidate:
• The general entrance requirements for doctoral studies at the ETH Zurich and at the respective department must be fulfilled.
• Experience in the selected research area is required.
• Preference will be given to citizens of Least Developed Countries and other Low-Income Countries according to the OECD DAC-list classification1 (soft factor).
Visiting Student Grants
Eligible are doctoral or advanced masters students who are registered at a university or research institute in a country listed in the OECD/DAC list 2018-2020. Preference will be given to students from lower-income countries.
It is a requirement that the doctoral or master student and the hosting ETH professor have been in contact before the research stay.

Scholarships
The E4D doctoral scholarship is around EUR 164674.88 for a period of three years. The scholarship period can be extended to a no-cost extension. Out of the scholarship grant, EUR 158,000 is reserved to cover the salary of the E4D Fellow for three years (level of employment: 100%, incl. social security), EUR 7,760 for material costs and/or travels. Employment after the granted time period must be financed by other sources.
Visiting Student Grants
The grant covers the following expenses up to a maximum of around EUR 9409.99.
• Living allowance for the duration of the research stay, EUR 2,180 per month.
• Economy roundtrip ticket (maximum EUR 1,890)
• Visa fees
How to Apply?
Scholarships
The application procedure consists of two steps.
- The candidate submits a concept note to the E4D programme office by e-mail to Ms. Patricia Heuberger (patricia.heuberger@sl.ethz.ch). The deadline for submitting concept notes is 30 April 2020. Only concept notes fulfilling all indicated requirements will be taken into consideration and will be evaluated by the ETH4D Committee for Exchanges with regard to their suitability for an E4D Scholarship.
- Candidates whose concept note is accepted by the ETH4D Committee for Exchanges elaborate a full proposal together with the professor who agreed to supervise the project. If the candidate and the professor do not know each other, they must set up a meeting to discuss the full proposal elaboration. This meeting is either a face-to-face meeting or a skype meeting.

Visiting Student Grants
The application needs to be submitted by the ETH professor hosting the doctoral/MSc student. Applications directly sent by the student will NOT be considered. The application needs to be sent in one single pdf document to patricia.heuberger@sl.ethz.ch.
Application Documents for an ETH4D Student Exchange Grant comprise:
– Completed Application Form
– Motivation letter of the doctoral/MSc student
– CV of the doctoral/MSc student, including publication list
– Support letter of the hosting ETH professor
