Description:
The Józef Tischner Junior Visiting Fellowship, offered by the Institute for Human Sciences (IWM) in Vienna, Austria, provides scholars in the humanities and social sciences an opportunity to pursue their research projects in a stimulating academic environment. Fellows are invited to spend a four-month term between September 2025 and June 2026 at the IWM, engaging with the Institute’s research fields and contributing to its intellectual community. The fellowship honors Józef Tischner, a prominent Polish philosopher and the first chaplain of Solidarność, reflecting his commitment to humanistic scholarship and social engagement.
Eligibility:
- Must be a Polish citizen, Polish-American scholar, or permanently reside in Poland.
- Enrolled in a doctoral program in the humanities or social sciences, or have obtained a PhD in these fields within the past four years.
- A thematic relation to one of the IWM’s research fields is strongly encouraged.

How to apply?
Applications must be submitted through the IWM’s online application form. The application should include:
- A brief letter of motivation addressing how the project would benefit from time at the IWM, its connection to the IWM’s mission and research, and concrete research/writing goals during the fellowship.
- A project description (maximum 550 characters).
- A detailed project proposal (maximum 7,500 characters, including spaces) containing:
- Description of the project’s objectives.
- Discussion of the current state of research.
- Methodology.
- Work plan.
- Curriculum vitae, including a list of publications.
- Two letters of recommendation from scholars familiar with the applicant’s academic work.
All application materials should be in English. Attached documents must be combined into a single PDF, as the online submission form only allows for one attachment. File names of attachments must use Latin characters.
