DESCRIPTION

The Global Development Awards Competition is administered by GDN, funded under the Policy and Human Resources Development Fund (PHRD) trust fund managed by the World Bank, and generously supported by the Ministry of Finance, Government of Japan.

The 2021 edition of the Global Development Awards Competition will feature two categories:

The Japanese Award for Outstanding Research on Development (2021)

The Japanese Award for Outstanding Research on Development (ORD) is a competitive research grant program that identifies and funds outstanding research proposals that have a high potential for excellence in research and clear policy implications for addressing development issues in low and middle-income countries (World Bank definition).

The Global Development Network (GDN) invites researchers from low-income or middle-income countries to submit research proposals within the theme, ‘International trade and the promotion of biodiversity.’

The Japanese Award for Most Innovative Development Project (2021)

The Japanese Award for Most Innovative Development Project (MIDP) is a competitive grant program that supports non-profit Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in low or lower-middle-income countries (World Bank definition) to recognize the innovative approach of their projects. The first prize winner is also eligible to compete under the Japan Social Development Fund for an additional grant of up to US$ 200,000 to pilot their innovative work at a larger scale.

The Global Development Network (GDN) invites non-profit NGOs and CSOs from low and lower-middle-income countries to submit project applications within the following three themes: ‘Universal health coverage and COVID,’ ‘Community-driven, climate-related, disaster risk reduction in rural areas’ and ‘Quality urban infrastructure and community driven governance.’

ELIGIBILITY

The Japanese Award for Outstanding Research on Development (2021)

  •  Researchers who are citizens of countries classified by the World Bank as low-income or middle-income countries.
  • The upper age limit for all applicants is 45 years as of 20 July 2021
  • The proposal should not be receiving or scheduled to receive funds from other sources, unless it is clearly explained how the additional funds provided by the ORD would reinforce the existing funds for successful completion of the research.
  • Staff members of multilateral and bilateral organizations are not eligible to apply.
  • Previous and current employees of GDN or its Regional Network Partners are not eligible to apply up till 5 years from the completion of their tenure. Previous GDN Board Members, project mentors and members of evaluation teams are not eligible to apply.
  • Similar proposals or papers resulting as products from full or partial GDN funded activities cannot be submitted for the competition.
  • Past ORD winners and finalists are not eligible to apply with the same or similar research proposal. Additionally, winners are not eligible to apply for a period of 3 years subsequent to the end of their agreement with GDN. More information here.

The Japanese Award for Most Innovative Development Project (2021)

  •  The MIDP Award is open to all development projects being implemented in low-income and lower-middle-income countries.
  • Comply with the WB Environmental and Social Framework’s (ESF) and the Environmental and Social Standards (ESSs).
  • The project must be managed by a non-profit, Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) or Civil Society Organization (CSO) with headquarters in one of the eligible countries.
  • Projects must have started its implementation on 1st June 2020 or earlier to be considered eligible.
  • Recently started or only project idea or a feasibility or baseline study will not be considered.
  • Submissions for funding conferences will not be considered.
  • Applicants from previous years (except winners) may re-apply, but they must update the application to include new aspects of the project.

BENEFITS

The Japanese Award for Outstanding Research on Development (2021)

  • The three winning projects will receive grants worth USD $45,000.
  • The first prize winner will receive a grant of USD $30,000
  • The second prize and third prize winners will receive a grant USD $5,000 respectively.

The Japanese Award for Most Innovative Development Project (2021)

  • For each theme, the winning projects will receive grants worth USD $45,000, and in total the MIDP will award 9 grants worth USD $135,000.
  • The two first prize winners under each theme will receive a grant of USD $20,000 each.
  • The second prize will receive a grant of USD $5,000.
