Description

Founded by the world-renowned BBC Aeronautics Correspondent Reg Turnill and his wife, Margaret, to celebrate the life and works of HG Wells and encourage creative writing, especially among the young.

The annual HG Wells Short Story Competition offers a Senior and  Junior prize and free publication of all shortlisted entries in a quality, professionally published paperback anthology (and Kindle version).

The theme for this year’s competition is PEACE in its broadest interpretation.

Entries must be in English. The length is 1,500 to 5,000 words. Double quotation marks should be used for speech and single quotation marks for other appropriate purposes.

Eligibility

Anyone. HG Wells was a self-taught writer, so everyone are encouraged to give it a go.

Awards

There are two categories:

  • Authors 21 years of age and under with a prize of GBP 1,000 (Entry is free);
  • Authors aged 22 years and above with a prize of GBP 250 (entry GBP 10 or GBP 5 with student id).

How to Apply?

Entrants must read the Competition Rules before submitting their story/stories.

Entry will be via online form only. The entry form will be online at www.hgwellscompetition.com. It will be possible to attach your story as a PDF or text document to your online entry. Only one entry / story per form: if you wish to enter multiple stories, complete the online form for each story. All entries must relate to the theme for this year’s Competition: PEACE.
Payment of fees, if required, will be by Paypal at the time of submission.
