Deadline: 16 May 2016
Open to: investigative journalists
Grant: average USD 5,000
The Fund for Investigative Journalism (FIJ) encourages applications for stories that break new ground and expose wrongdoing – such as corruption, malfeasance, or misuse of power – in the public and private sectors. The Fund accepts applications for projects on domestic and international issues. The Fund for Investigative Journalism’s Board of Directors meets three times each year to consider grant applications for investigative projects.
The Fund encourages proposals written for ethnic media and submitted by journalists of color. Recent grants include investigations on abusive labor brokers in Thailand, an American abroad who refused to be an FBI informant and the burning of trees as a renewable energy source in Canada.
Investigative journalists can apply for this reporting grant.
- Proposals must come from US-based reporters or stories must have a US angle, involving American citizens, government, or business;
- The Fund is not currently making grants for foreign-based stories that do not have a US component;
- All stories must be published in English – either by an English language publication or outlet, or by an outlet that has an affiliation with an English language site.
The average award is USD 5,000, which should cover out-of-pocket expenses such as travel costs. The Fund does not cover grantees’ salaries or equipment. The first half of the grant is given once an application is approved and the second half is paid when the project is complete. Small stipends may also be available.
