Summer School of Investigative Reporting in Montenegro

Description

Organized in cooperation with the Media Program South East Europe of the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung, the BIRN Summer School of Investigative Reporting offers an excellent training opportunity in investigative reporting and media outlets for journalists, reporters or higher education representatives aiming at including investigative reporting in their school curricula.

The summer school hosts award-winning trainers from the Balkans, EU, and USA who teach the latest techniques in investigative reporting, information source reliability and web search. This year’s school will be held the last week of August in the holiday resort Bečiči, in Montenegro. The activities will involve case studies discussions, film screenings and panel debates.

Eligibility

The school is open to journalists, reporters, international correspondents from the Balkans or elsewhere, representatives of higher educational institutions interested in implementing investigative journalism in the school’s curriculum, and representatives of organizations fighting against organized crime and corruption.

Costs

The course fee of 790 Euro is all-inclusive, covering tuition, accommodation and all meals. The fee also includes BIRN’s published textbook “Digging Deeper: A Guide for Investigative Journalists in the Balkans”. Organizers are also offering the following benefits:

  1. Reduced Early Bird Fee of 650 Euro for applications received before 25 June 2014.
  2. Full scholarships for journalists from the Balkans: Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Kosovo, Macedonia, Montenegro, Romania, and Serbia. These scholarships will additionally cover up to 100 Euro travel expenses. Applicants must be nationals from one of the above mentioned Balkan countries, have at least three years of experience in journalism, and provide a sample of their published work translated in English. The deadline for scholarship applications is 25 July 2014.

Application

Applicants must fill in the application form on-line (to find it, you must scroll drown in the link) and attach the following documents: letter of motivation, CV,  sample of work (for scholarship applicants only), and idea for investigation. Deadline for ordinary applications is 12 August 2014.
