Description

The Conservation Leadership Programme (CLP) is a partnership initiative that includes four conservation organisations – BirdLife International, Conservation International, Fauna & Flora International, the Wildlife Conservation Society – and BP plc. The mission of the Conservation Leadership Programme is to promote the development of future conservation leaders and provide them with the capacity to address the most significant conservation issues of our time.

The Conservationist Leadership Programme (CLP) has been helping young conservationists to achieve their goals and move into positions of influence within the conservation sector for more than 25 years. Every year they put out a call for funding applications for conservation awards. Successful applicants will:

  1. develop the knowledge, skills and abilities of team members;
  2. implement a focused, high-priority conservation project combining research and action;
  3. contribute to the long-term success of local conservation efforts.

The CLP offers three different grants for team projects each year. The Future Conservationist, Conservation Follow-up and Conservation Leadership Awards are arranged in a tiered system, which allows progression – from encouraging and supporting inexperienced teams who are undertaking small-scale, basic surveying and awareness-raising projects, to the stage where teams are learning to command much more complex decision-making, communication and leadership skills.

Eligibility

Eligible projects must occur in and be led by nationals of countries excluded from the World Bank list of high-income economies across Africa, Asia, Eastern and South-eastern Europe, the Middle East, the Pacific, Latin America and theCaribbean, where there tends to be fewer resources and capacity for conservation. Exceptions include some high-income economies located in some temperate and tropical areas of high biological diversity but thought to have low national capacity for conservation, including the Pacific Islands, Caribbean Islands and the Middle East.

All applicants to Future Conservationist awards and new members to Follow-up and Leadership awards must be early career conservationists. By this we mean that applicants must have no more than 5 years paid conservation experience each. Each applicant must provide evidence to prove that they meet this criterion, for example in the form of a detailed employment history on the application form. Academic pursuits such as a PhD do not count as paid experience.

Before applying all applicants should take the Eligibility Quiz to ensure they meet the award criteria.
