The Center for International Media Ethics (CIME) is seeking entries for its “Ethicontest,” an essay-writing competition open to journalists, freelancers and students worldwide.
Description
After the outstanding success of last year’s Ethicontest, the Center for International Media Ethics is proud to announce Ethicontest 2011. Journalists and media professionals from around the world are invited to participate in our second annual essay-writing competition for a chance to win.
The Essay TopiC: “What are the ethical pitfalls of news photography from conflict or disaster zones, and how should a journalist choose what to publish?”
The Conditions: Submitted essays should be no longer than 2,000 words. They must be written in English. Please note that due to the large number of submissions we receive, CIME is not able to assess essays written in other languages. In the event the author submits an article that has already been published, it should include a reference to its original publication date and source (as well as website link, in the case of online publication).
Eligibility
- Journalists and media professionals from around the world are invited to participate.
- The contest is open to aspiring and established media writers of all varieties, from journalists to freelancers to students.
- Essays must be written in English.
Prize
The winner of the 2011 CIME Ethicontest will be awarded a scholarship to become certified in J-Ethinomics, CIME’s online media-ethics training program.
In addition, the winner will receive the book “The Elements of Journalism: What Newspeople Should Know and the Public Should Expect” by Bill Kovach and Tom Rosenstiel. The perfect addition to any journalist or journalism student’s bookshelf, the book discusses the ethics, commercial pressures, techniques and future of journalism. Please note that “The Elements of Journalism” is in English. Finally, the winning essay will be published on the CIME website and in the CIME newsletter.

Essays should be emailed to ethicontest@cimethics.org no later than November 30, 2011, along with the author’s name, country of origin and contact information.
