Description

Arabic or Portuguese, Dari or Pashto, Hausa or Hindi — and fluent German? Unusual linguistic abilities are the most important requirement for the international traineeship.The international traineeship is specially designed for young journalists from the regions to which Deutsche Welle broadcasts. Deutsche Welle trains its own young journalists for its programming in some 30 foreign languages. Every year, a decision is reached on which programs need new young journalists.

Selection Procedure:
1st Round: Approximately 100 applicants are chosen from the many candidates who applied online.
2nd Round: These applicants must write a short report on a given topic within two weeks. Then the best of them will take part in a conference call to test their linguistic and communication skills – in both German and their respective native language.Prior notification will be provided as to which native languages are required for the training program.
3rd Round: A few weeks later, approximately one third of the applicants who submitted reports will be invited to the final round.

Eligibility

  • Applicants must have native fluency in Arabic, Russian, Chinese, Kiswahili, Spanish, Portuguese, Pashto, Dari, Urdu or English, as well as good working knowledge of German with language certification.
  • A very good working knowledge of German is also required, with the following certification: Goethe-Zertifikat B2 or TestDaf level TDN3 or DSH1.
  • University degree or vocational training or comparable qualification through training and professional experience.
  • Practical experience working as a journalist, freelance work, etc.

Scholarship

Deutsche Welle is hosting a fellowship program worth approximately EU€27,500 (about US$37,500) for young journalists to receive professional editorial training for radio, television and online media.
The program consists of seminars and hands-on training. Participants will also learn about German culture through lectures and excursions.
