Slovak Government Scholarships

Deadline: 20 May 2011
Open to:
students between 18 – 26 years
Duration:
for the period of study and one-year scholarship for language or technical preparation
Scholarship: full

The provision of development aid of the Slovak Republic (SR) in the area of education takes the form of the award of scholarships of the Government of the SR that are consistent with the conditions approved by the Government Resolution No.344/2010 of 25 May 2010 for developing countries and for Slovaks living abroad.

The official range of scholarship positions available is annually notified through the diplomatic offices of the SR abroad.

Under the development aid for the developing countries, the official offer is sent to the ministry of foreign affairs of the relevant country in accordance with the approved breakdown of countries and scholarship places in particular academic years.

The award of the scholarship of the Government of the SR for a standard duration of study is conditional upon proficiency in the Slovak language at a required level and the admission to the study in selected course of study by a public university in the SR. To tackle the requirement, the Government of the SR provides a one-year scholarship for language preparation and, where necessary, also technical preparation. This takes place in the institutions that have been accredited for such preparation. Any arbitrary shortening of the period of study in the preparatory year is unacceptable. The scholarship holder is obliged to keep to the date of starting the study, as determined by school.

Conditions

Persons applying for a scholarship of the Slovak Government for bachelor, master and doctoral degree study programmes of university studies in the framework of the offer must meet the following conditions:

  • to have completed secondary school education with school leaving exam, to fulfil the conditions for acceptance for university studies pursuant to SR

  • for the scholarship of the Slovak Government for bachelor, master and doctoral studies can apply candidates between 18 and 26 years of age

Scholarships

  • a monthly grant of a stated amount, accommodation in a student hall of residence and meals in student canteens for a fee, just like students with the citizenship of the SR
  • accommodation in student halls of residence and catering in student dining halls for a charge equal to that for students with SR citizenship
  • education at the chosen public university, under the same conditions as provided for citizens of the SR during the study period set by the statute of the university

Scholarship of the Slovak Government for one-year language and vocational preparation if the applicant has not completed his/her secondary education in the SR or at a secondary school with Slovak language lessons abroad. Graduation from this does not replace the acceptance proceedings for university study pursuant to SR Act No. 131/2002 Coll. on Higher Education and on Changes and Amendments to Some Acts, as amended.

    1. Hello, Osman,

so, if you read through the conditions on the website: http://www.studyin.sk, you should: “submit a completed application form for the provision of a scholarship of the Slovak Government with a statement of the field of the doctoral study according to the current list of fields of doctoral studies provided in the SR with a preliminary acceptance of the envisaged training workplace in the SR, as well as the relevant appendices stated on the application form…”

So, you should choose a university (Faculty of Medicine in Bratislava: http://www.fmed.uniba.sk, Jessenius Faculty of Medicine in Martin: eng.jfmed.uniba.sk) and the supervisor of your preference and try to get accepted and only then apply for the scholarship.

      Good luck,

Here is a direct link to the application: http://www.studyin.sk/en/applicationGOV.pdf and on page 5 you can find a list of all the documents required to be sent along with the application form.

      1. I'm from Macedonia.
First all documents I should send in Slovak embassy in Macedonia, then they will send in Bratislava, right? I have that information, but I don't know is it true.

  1. Me again 🙂
I wrote to them, then they told me that everything is going by Ministry of education and science or Ministry оf foreign affairs.
Oh I'm so confused now 🙁
    What is right?
I'll bring all documentation to Slovak embassy then I'll see what will happened 🙂

    1. Dear,

the call is still not published on the web page of the Ministry of education, probably because it is too early, the deadline for applying is 30. May next year.
We would suggest to contact both the Ministry and the Slovak Embassy and get instructions on the delivery of the documents.

        1. In the application form: http://www.studyin.sk/en/applicationGOV.pdf on page 5 you can find a list of all the documents that you need to bring along with the application. If you don't have all these documents, your application will not be considered.
That is why I said that it is to early. How can you apply for university without high school diploma? I believe that for high school students the deadline will be extended and the diploma can be brought additionally, after you get accepted, but now try to get all the other documents as birth certificate, medical certificate, recommendation from professors, CV etc.

        2. All documents I have, but I still don't have passport. I can have, but If they don't choose me, I don't need it. The passport number can I tell later If they choose me?
1 month or less is nessesary for to have, so it won't be a problem.

  2. I have 1 more question.
This year I'll graduate, so still I don't have diploma for my graduation.I'm in secondary school, last year, but I will not have dipoloma in a period to 30 May.
What should I do? Does some other documents can help me?

  3. Hello

I am interested about Constantine the Philosopher in Nitra – faculty of arts. I’ve already visited their site and I have to say that I don’t quite understand all about that, for example, I don’t understand their program about the subjects that are included in that faculty. I want to ask do I have to choose between English, Spanish, History, Religious studies, Russian studies etc that are mentioned there?

    Anastasija

    1. Hello,

I support your interest about the University in Nitra.

Please contact the university with your questions or try to find answers on the official site of the university.

  4. Hello

    I have one more question.
In the application form on page 5 there are mention the required documents which we need to send along with the application, and among the others there is the document of integrity. Can you explain me what kind of document is that?

    Thank you

    1. Hello Anastasija,

once again, Slovakia and Slovak translation services rule!!:)
The document of integrity for them means a clean criminal record.
So, what you have to provide is the proof you have no crime history, in most of the countries, there is a special police office handling and giving these documents out.

      Good luck,

Kristina, angry at Slovak translation lameness

  5. Hi

I'm 28 year old Jordanian holding master degree in Mathematics. Can I apply for the PhD scholarship? Should I have to get an admission in one of the Slovak universities firstly?

    1. Hi Abdullah,
here is link with some good info in eglish. http://www.saia.sk/en/
It will help u to find good university according to ur requirments. The admission will not be a problem – generaly University are happy to accept new foreign students.
I am not sure, probably it will not be easy to get the scholarship, because Slovak republic doesn´t have any bilateral agreement with Jordan to provide financial support for students, but dont give up! Try to contact that organization (saia) to ask for more info.
      Good Luck!

    1. Dear Alexandra,

Language courses start from the beginning – from September-October.
The Embassy has nothing to do with them:), the Ministry of education does, and yes, they are provided for free.
Try to browse through Slovak universities, e.g. University of Economy in Bratislava or University of Matej Bel in Banska Bystrica.
      Or visit http://www.studyin.sk/

      Best,

    1. Dear Hamad,

I am afraid your age rules you out in this case:(
However, try options in other countries with a higher age limit:

Czech Republic (unfortunately, the deadline is already gone): http://www.mladiinfo.com/2010/11/03/czech-governm

Belgium (unfortunately, the deadline is already gone): http://www.mladiinfo.com/2011/01/14/masters-and-thttp://www.mladiinfo.com/2010/12/08/courses-and-t

Try to find sth in Netherlands, too: http://www.grantfinder.nl/content/index.asp

      and other countries
I hope that I helped you somehow. 🙂

    1. Hi Wali,

the best is to contact your ministry of foreign affairs or the Slovak embassy in your country (if existing) to ask if there are scholarships available for your country.
`Under the development aid for the developing countries, the official offer is sent to the ministry of foreign affairs of the relevant country in accordance with the approved breakdown of countries and scholarship places in particular academic years.`

      Kind regards,
      Greet

  8. Hi,

I graduated in English language and literature in 2008. Now i want to apply for this scholarship for postgraduate studies in English language and literature at the University of Nitra. I would like to know if its compulsory to attend the preparatory course for Slovak language, because I have already applied at the university for study in English. And I would also like to know whether I have any chance of getting the scholarship for study of English language and literature, because as i recall, last year's was only for technical studies.

I called the Slovak Embassy in Skopje but they weren't able to give me any info and redirected me to mladiinfo instead.

    Regards,
    A Macedonian English Teacher

    1. Hello,

      so.
For being considered for the scholarship, you should have "gained the academic title “MSc.” and intend to study some technical/natural science.

However, in the list of previously granted scholarships I saw one Kenyan student studying Teaching Art and Education Studies (but only at the level of Bachelor's/Master's degree and ILAP – Institute for Language and Academic Preparation for Foreign Students), so maybe it is not so hopeless – the Embassy, after all, chooses the candidates (so, maybe, the Ambassadator could help you, you know, he will spare the word here and there, "makedonska rabota";) )
But I don't want to give you false hopes.
About the course, well, the problem is that the scholarship "for a standard duration of study is conditional upon proficiency in the Slovak language at a required level."
So I would say, it is sort of compulsory, yet, unfortunately, I am not sure.

Fuh, a hard nut to crack.
You know, there is a Macedonian scholar at UKF, Zvonko Taneski, try to ask him about the conditions. ztaneski@ukf.sk

      Good luck,

      Kristina,
      Mladiinfo

  9. Hello,

I'm student from Macedonia on postgraduate studies in field of Graphic Design, and i want to apply for PhD scholarship on Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava. I don't have any exam left, but I will have my master thesis defense in beginning of May, and the main problem is that i doubt i will get my transcript of records and proof of study until 30th of May because of the lack of promptness of the institute. Is there any way to apply, and send the document later?

    Thanks in advance

    1. Hello, informer,

If you take a look at the conditions, arts programme are eligible only for Slovaks abroad

      "and for Slovaks living abroad,
Teaching, educational activity and pedagogic sciences (1.1.1 to 1.1.10)
      Humanities (2.1.1 – 2.1.28)
      Arts (2.2.1 – 2.2.8)"

So therefore, I think you are not eligible. And the late delivery of the annexes (transcripts of records and the proof of study) indeed is a problem. However, I would advise you to get in touch with the Embassy of Slovak Republic in Skopje and try to "persuade" them about your good cause. That is the only advice, unfortunately, i can give you.

      Good luck anyway,

      Kristina,
      Mladiinfo

  10. Hello

I read that one of the conditions for this scholarship is to have completed secondary school education with school leaving exam. I am from Macedonia and one year, the year when I graduated secondary school, there were no leaving exams, so we got our diplomas based on our results during the secondary school. So now I don't know if I am qualified to apply for the scholarship or not, please tell me what to do.

    Thank You in advance

    1. Dear Kate,

yes, sure, you are, the diploma is an equivalent of a leaving exam, so have it translated and notarially certified, prepare the other necessary documents and apply.

      Good luck,

      Kristina,
