University of Edinburgh

The University of Edinburgh,  is an internationally renowned centre for teaching and research in the capital city of Scotland. It is consistently placed amongst the best in the world and one of the five best universities in UK. It was the fourth university to be established in Scotland in 1582, making it one of the ancient universities of the United Kingdom. The University of Edinburgh’s Academic structure is based on 3 Colleges containing a total of 22 Schools.

International Student

The University welcomes applications from well qualified European students and has a long tradition of admitting Europeans to a wide range to undergraduate, postgraduate and exchange programmes.

Undergraduate applications

An undergraduate degree is a first degree for those who do not already hold one. To apply for a full-time undergraduate degree programme with us you must apply through UCAS. UCAS is the central organisation that processes applications for undergraduate courses at UK universities. The application process is the same for international, EU and UK applicants. Entry to many areas of the University is very competitive, so high standards of performance are generally required and specific requirements vary from programme to programme. Read more.

Postgraduate applications

A postgraduate degree is a second degree for university graduates, leading to a masters or PhD qualification. Applications for second degrees should be made directly to University of Edinburgh. The University uses an online application system.

Visiting and exchange students

There are several programmes for students who wish to come to Edinburgh for a semester or an academic year:

The entry requirements and application process vary depending on the programme.

Study abroad
Students currently taking an undergraduate degree elsewhere are able to spend a year (or semester) of their studies at the University of Edinburgh on a Study Abroad Programme. Your year or semester in Edinburgh may count towards your final degree at your home university. You can study at Edinburgh for the full academic year or either the autumn (fall) or spring semester.

Erasmus
There are around 350 Erasmus exchange places for students from partner universities across Europe. Before you can apply to Edinburgh as an Erasmus student, you must be nominated by your home university. Please check with your study abroad advisor or Erasmus/International Office at your home university to see if Edinburgh has an agreement in your subject area. Students may study at the University for a semester or a full academic year. The study period will depend on the agreement  with your university. The courses you will be considered for will depend on the Erasmus exchange agreement you are admitted under. If you apply as a full-year Erasmus student, we guarantee accommodation.

International exchange (outside Europe)
There are around 170 exchange places for students from partner universities outside Europe. You must obtain permission from your university to apply to Edinburgh under the international exchange programme. Most of exchange agreements are for the full academic year. There is a huge range of courses within the College of Humanities and Social Sciences and the College of Science and Engineering. Some exchange agreements are subject specific. In this case, you would be expected to take the majority of your courses in this subject area. Check with your study abroad advisor or international officer at your university for advice. Freshman Year Abroad
North American students in their final year of high school are invited to apply to our Freshman Year Abroad programme.

Parliamentary Programme
Students complete three academic courses which are classroom based, followed by a research project supervised by a member of the Scottish Parliament and an academic from the Institute of Governance. You will have study space in the Parliament Building as well as an academic base in the Institute of Governance. To be eligible students must have completed at least two years of study at their home institution. Enrolment in the programme is highly selective and will be restricted to no more than twenty students in any semester.
