As a center for higher education and research, the University of Lyon consists of 16 institutions of higher education. The University of Lyon has three main universities and a number of member institutions. The three universities are: Claude Bernard University Lyon 1, offering health and science studies with approximately 27,000 students, Lumière University Lyon 2, focusing on the social sciences with about 30,000 students, and Jean Moulin University Lyon 3, providing about 20,000 students with the opportunity to enroll in studies related to the humanities and law.

Foreign students make up more than 13% of the whole student community in Lyon. In 2005/2006, Lyon welcomed 16000 foreign students came to Lyon, 2500 of which were there via an exchange program.
