Katholieke Universiteit Leuven is situated in Leuven, the heart of Western Europe. This University has been a centre of learning for almost six centuries. Founded in 1425 by Pope Martin V, K.U.Leuven is being the oldest existent Catholic university in the world and the oldest university in the Low Countries. With more than 35000 students , the K.U. Leuven is also the largest university in the Low Countries.

Katholieke Universiteit Leuven has a large number of faculties, departments and schools. They are generally divided into those belonging to Humanities and Social Sciences, Science, Engineering and Technology, Biomedical Sciences, as well as the Intergroup/Interuniversity Institutes comprising the European Centre for Ethics, Higher Institute of Labour Studies (HIVA), Interfaculty Centre for Agrarian History, University Statistics Centre (UCS), University of Leuven Energy Institute, Interface – Centre K.U.Leuven – Caritas Catholica (LUCAS).

How to apply

In order to enroll at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven student have to fulfill specific diploma and language requirements. Detailed description can be found in the admissions section of the official website. The official language of instruction at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven is Dutch. However, English taught courses are also available.
K.U.Leuven only accepts exchange students in the framework of the official EU exchange programmes or as part of one of the many formally signed exchange agreements between K.U.Leuven and partner institutions abroad. Students should first check whether their home university has an exchange agreement with K.U.Leuven in the field of study they are interested in applying for.

There are two deadlines per academic year:  15 March and 15 October.
For the agreements with European partners, there is an extra deadline on 15 January.
All applications should be sent to the International Office of the candidate’s home university.

Exchange students and scholarships

Some students from abroad are granted the status of “exchange student”. Most of them take part in one of the European Commission’s educational programmes, such as Lifelong Learning Programme/ Erasmus . Others are visiting Leuven in the framework of an exchange agreement at faculty level between their home university and K.U.Leuven.
