Description
The Reham al-Farra (RAF) Memorial Journalists’ Fellowship Programme is looking for suitable young (under 35) full-time journalists, nationals of this country, working in print, web-based, radio or television media to participate in its 2013 Programme.
The Programme was established in 1980 by the UN General Assembly and renamed in September 2003 “Reham Al-Farra Memorial Journalists’ Fellowship Programme” to honour Ms. Reham Al-Farra, a young UN staff member killed in the bombing of the UN Headquarters in Baghdad. It provides junior and mid-level broadcasters and journalists from developing countries and countries with economies in transition with an opportunity to gain first hand experience in the work of the United Nations. It is also an opportunity to meet journalists from other countries and exchange ideas with UN communication professionals.
This year, the Fellowship is open to journalists and broadcasters from 20 countries with the intention of selecting 11 candidates, each one from a different country. The Programme will start on Tuesday, 3 September in New York and conclude on Friday, 4 October in Geneva. Air transportation to New York, from New York to Geneva and back to country of origin as well as a daily subsistence allowance (DSA) to cover meals, local transportation and other expenses are provided by the Programme.
The schedule of activities will include briefings by senior officials of the UN Secretariat, UN Specialized Agencies, programmes and funds on major issues included in the proceedings of the 68th Session of the General Assembly. The participants will shadow UN media professionals and participate in hands on activities and workshops. They will undertake professional work assignments and each of them will compile a dossier of news stories or scripts. They will also visit major media organizations and relevant NGOs in New York and in Geneva to observe their operations. Upon completion of the Programme requirements and assignments participants will receive a certificate of participation.
Eligibility
Candidates must be nationals of one of the following countries and must meet all the following requirements:
Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Brunei Darussalam, Central African Republic, Democratic Peoples Republic of Korea, Djibouti, Dominica, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Grenada, Guinea-Bissau, Iraq, Kuwait, Nicaragua, Paraguay, Poland, Qatar, Sierra Leone, Turkmenistan and Macedonia
- Age between 22 and 35.
- Currently employed by a recognized media organization. Freelancers, translators and UN employees are not eligible.
- Oral and written fluency in English.
- Several years of professional journalism experience and proven interest in the work of the United Nations.
Scholarship

Interested journalists should complete the Application form and submit it together with all supporting documents (3 samples (or links) of UN related work, photocopy of the passport, the diploma and a letter from current employer via e-mail to Ms. Milica Trpevska, UN Communications Officer, Office of the UN Resident Coordinator at milica.trpevska@undp.org no later than Tuesday, 30 April 2013.
All applicants will be notified of the results in June 2013.
