Balkan Fellowship for Journalistic Excellence

Fund: bursary of €2,000, a travel allowance of up to €2,000 plus additional support

The Robert Bosch Stiftung and ERSTE Foundation, in cooperation with the Balkan Investigative Reporting Network, BIRN, announce a fellowship programme for journalists in the Balkans.

Ten fellows from Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Kosovo, Macedonia, Montenegro, Romania and Serbia will be selected on the basis of applications submitted. The fellowship will run from April until December 2010. Fellows are expected during this period to produce one in-depth journalistic article of approximately 2,000 words, based on the research proposal they submit.

Theme of the Fellowship Call 2010: TABOO
We invite candidates for the Balkan Fellowship for Journalistic Excellence in 2010 to identify, explore and demystify taboo issues about which there is little serious discussion in the media in South East Europe, and to strip away the fellowship.birn.eu.com clichés surrounding them.

Eligibility
Applicants should be:
– individuals from Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Kosovo, Macedonia, Montenegro, Romania and Serbia with a demonstrable journalistic experience
– proficient in English (speaking, reading and understanding), although reports may be written in local languages

Fellowship
– s bursary of €2,000, a travel allowance of up to €2,000 and a chance to participate in a seven-month programme of professional development
– the opportunity to travel across the region to produce an in depth report with a regional and European dimension
– training from internationally recognised journalists and experts.
– the opportunity to have their work published Europe-wide and to become a member of a growing network for journalistic excellence in the Balkans

Award
In addition, the independent Selection Committee will award bursaries of € 4,000, € 3,000 and € 1,000 for further professional development to the authors of the three winning articles.

Application procedure
The applicants need to submit following dociments:
1. application form with the project proposal
2. example of Applicant’s Work (at least one relevant example of their writing, samples may be provided in local languages)
