Description
The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science of the Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) is searching for an excellent candidate for a 4-year Ph.D. position in Mathematics, to begin preferably in Fall 2012. TU/e is a leading international university of technology specializing in Engineering Science & Technology. Through excellent teaching and research we contribute to progress in the technical sciences, to the development of technological innovations, and as a result to the growth of prosperity and welfare in the region and beyond. TU/e maintains close links with industry, healthcare and the building and logistics sectors.
The project “Adaptive Sensing for Estimation and Testing” tackles the problem of inference and learning when closing the loop between data analysis and acquisition. It is often possible to use information gleaned from previous observations to sequentially focus the data collection process, in what is generically known as sequential experimental designs or adaptive sensing. The overall aim of this project is to further the understanding of adaptive sensing, both at a foundational and applied level, by characterizing the benefits and drawbacks of these sensing paradigms and by developing practical inference methodologies. These challenging goals will entail the development and use of sound probability, learning theory, and statistic tools and techniques. The project will be carried out within the Probability and Statistics group of the Eindhoven University of Technology, and will be supervised by Dr. Rui Castro, in collaboration with Prof. Remco van der Hofstad and Dr. Eduard Belitser. Eligibility
Candidates should hold a degree in either applied mathematics or statistics, or may have a different background (e.g., computer science or engineering) but with a very strong mathematical foundation. Research experience will be highly valued. Successful applicants will likely hold a Masters degree in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, Engineering Sciences or related fields. Proficiency in English is also required, and if deemed needed the candidate will be requested to supply the necessary evidence.
Remuneration
The offer includes:
- a full-time temporary appointment for a period of 4 years leading to a PhD thesis, with an intermediate evaluation after 10 months (starting date preferably September 1, 2012)
- a gross monthly salary in accordance with the Collective Labor Agreement of the Dutch Universities (CAO NU), increasing from €2042 per month initially, to €2612 in the fourth year. Additional budget allows for extensive research visits abroad
- a broad package of fringe benefits (e.g. excellent technical infrastructure, child day-care, savings schemes, and excellent sports facilities)
- assistance in finding accommodation will be given to candidates from abroad
