Description

The international migration into the European Union from outside and also within borders of the European countries will become major societal and political challenges in future. The “old” and “new” immigration destinations and transit countries are confronted with issues of integration and social inclusion, which often include local and regional interdependences with social and economic problems.

At the same time international migrants as well as cross-border transfers of residents have a major influence on the spatial and settlement development in Germany and other European countries. They lead to a progressive heterogenization of society and growing demands on the social and spatial integration. International migration and integration represent particular urban phenomena, with effects of changes to urban areas relate to them. In the main center of attention are the core positions of large metropolitan areas, but also large urban agglomerations that are affected by this effect. In structural terms, the spatial inter-regional disparities are reinforced.

During the International Summer School “multi-culturalism in the Spatial Development”, organized by the Academy for Spatial Research and Planning (ARL – Akademie für Raumforschung und Landesplanung) and the Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava, the questions of spatial implications of immigration and integration in the context of multicultural approaches and perspectives will be discussed.
