Description

The European Centre for Minority Issues (ECMI) invites applications for two positions as Project Research Associate within the field of “Minority Studies”. Minority Studies at ECMI cover research on national and ethnic autochtonous minority issues in Europe.

The main task of the two Project Research Associates will be to conduct research in the areas of minorities in relation to non-territorial autonomy or border regions.

Selection Criteria and Tasks

Position A

The position will focus on minorities in border regions. The successful candidate will participate in the conceptualization and preparation of a major international research project on the competencies of national minorities in European border regions. Prior knowledge of European politics and policy on territorial management and/or cultural diversity is required. Knowledge about regional development is welcome. Educational background in law and/or political science/sociology is required. Language skills in an Eastern European language would be an advantage. Position B

The position will focus on institutional setups for minority participation in public life, particularly on non-territorial autonomy. The successful candidate will contribute to the preparation of a collaborative international research project on national minorities’ self-governance as well as minorities’ representative and consultative institutions. Prior knowledge of minority politics and policies of ethnic diversity management in Europe and North America is required. Knowledge of current public policies and jurisprudence concerning equality and non-discrimination is welcome. Educational background in law and/or political science/sociology is required. Positions A and B

In addition to the specific project tasks, both positions will entail participating in the ECMI’s professional activities, such as assisting in editorial tasks and other publication tasks, in training and teaching tasks, project management and public relations.

Candidates are required to document a Phd-degree or a near finished PhD in relevant disciplines. Good research skills, the ability to work in a team, and good communication skills in written and spoken English are necessary. Knowledge of German is an asset. Candidates without German language skills are expected to acquire these within a year or two.

Contracts are offered for one year with the option to renew for one more year pending project funds for the second year. Successful candidates are expected to take up residence in the region of Schleswig-Holstein or Southern Denmark. The ECMI is a German-Danish foundation under private German law. Remuneration is comparable to the German TVöD system (Labor Agreement for Public Service).
