6th “Summer School in Anthropology, Ethnography and Comparative Folklore of the Balkans”
27 July – 11 August 2011, Konitsa, Greece
The Department of History and Archaeology at the University of Ioannina in collaboration with the “Border Crossings” network of academics and the Municipality of Konitsa, organise the 6th “Summer School in Anthropology, Ethnography and Comparative Folklore of the Balkans” in the town of Konitsa in the period 27/7-11/8 2011.
1st week courses (28/7 – 31/7)
- Building post-socialism: Housing, social recognition and domestication of modernity
- Audio-visual methods in the field
- “Doing Fieldwork: Theory, Method and the Production of Anthropological Knowledge”
Ethnographic research in border areas: Course and fieldwork practice for all participants (1 – 5 /8)
- “Ethnographic Research in Border Areas: Field Practice in both Sides of the Greek-Albanian Border”
2nd group of courses (6 – 9/8)
- “Refugees and Forced Migration in the 20th century”
- “Looking Through Things: Problematising Museums and Food Consumption”
- Social memory and Diaspora in anthropological perspective: The Slovenian case
Eligibility
Eligible to apply are senior year undergraduate, MA and doctoral students from any Balkan, European or other country.
Course selection
Applicants are asked to select (see SECTION E in the application form) to select two (2) courses per course group, namely four (4) courses in total. Additionally, all applicants will have to attend the course “Ethnographic Research in Border Areas”. This is a core course and the participation in it is a prerequisite for the certificate of attendance.
Each course will be comprised by four (4) 120-minute sessions. The daily schedule will be comprised by two-morning and one-afternoon teaching sessions.
Costs
An estimated fee of 250 euro is necessary for admission. This amount is intended to cover the travel and accommodation costs of the lecturers and guest speakers. The fee should be paid upon registration in Konitsa.
Accommodation, meals and travel expenses during the Summer School (for attending activities related to the School) will be covered by the municipality of Konitsa.
Any travel costs for coming to and leaving Konitsa must be paid by the participants themselves.
