Description:
The Edinburgh Award for Flash Fiction is a prestigious competition organized by the Scottish Arts Trust. It invites writers from around the world to submit short stories of up to 250 words on any theme. The contest celebrates creativity across genres, including literary, historic, crime, romance, and humor, and seeks stories that transport readers to vivid moments. The top entries will not only compete for cash prizes but also for inclusion in the contest anthology, offering authors recognition and exposure. The competition culminates in the Flash Bash event, where shortlisted writers are invited to the Scottish Arts Club in Edinburgh to celebrate and announce the winners.
Eligibility:
The contest is open to writers worldwide, both published and unpublished, who are aged 16 and over. Submissions must be original, written in English, and suitable for an adult audience. Entries must not have been previously published, broadcast, or have won a prize. Simultaneous submissions are allowed, but authors must notify the organizers if their story wins or is published elsewhere.
Scholarship/ Awards:
- First Prize: £2,000, a trophy, and one year of free membership in the Scottish Arts Club.
- Second Prize: £500 and one year of free membership in the Scottish Arts Club.
- Third Prize: £250 and one year of free membership in the Scottish Arts Club.
- Golden Hare Award: £500 and one year of free membership in the Scottish Arts Club.
- Write Mango Award: £300, a mango trophy, and one year of free membership in the Scottish Arts Club.
- Commendations: Five commendations of £100 each.
- Publication: The top 20 stories will be offered publication in the contest anthology.
- Entry fee: £10 per story. Free entry is available through a bursary scheme from 3 May to 3 July 2024.
How to apply?
Submit your entries between 1 June and 31 August 2024. Each entry requires a £10 fee unless applying through the bursary scheme for free entry. Ensure your story is typed in a plain, legible font and submitted as a .doc, .docx, or .pdf file without any personal identifying information.
