European University Institute Grants for Doctoral Programs

Open to:PhD students meeting the requirements listed below

The EUI prepares researchers for developing and defending a doctoral thesis.
160 research grants are awarded annually by the EU Member States and other European national authorities to successful candidates.

Programme Structure:
* 1st year: Acquire a solid background for the doctoral work; set out the proposed research.
* 2nd and 3rd years: Research, field work, data collection, writing of the thesis under close supervision.
* 4th year: Writing up and preparation for the defence of the thesis. Part of the year may be used for professional or university traineeships or teaching opportunities

Candidates must have a good working knowledge of English.  Spoken and written tests in English (similar to the TOEFL or IELTS test) are obligatory for all candidates who are non-native speakers of English.

Application
For countries where grant agreements are in place the application for admission to the EUI doctoral programme is automatically an application for a national grant.

* United Kingdom

Admission Requirements
– Austria: completion of university studies (Magister-Grad)
– Belgium: maîtrise or master (economics), or licence with distinction
– Cyprus: Ptychion or equivalent degree
– Denmark: kandidateksamen
– Finland: ylempi korkeakoulututkinto/högre högskoleexamen, equivalent foreign degree
– France: DEA (or Master) or equivalent to bac + 5
– Germany: completion of university studies and the qualifications required to study for a doctorate
– Greece: ptychion
– Italy: laurea (vecchio ordinamento); laurea specialistica /Masters (nuovo ordiinamento)
– Netherlands: doctoraal examen or Master’s degree
– Norway: Master’s degree or Cand.Philol, Cand.Polit, Cand.Oecon., Cand.Sociol., or Cand.Jur.
– Poland: Magister, Magister inzynier lub inny równorzedny
– Portugal: licenciatura and qualifications required to study for a doctorate in Portugal
– Spain: licenciatura
– Sweden: kandidatexamen and the qualifications required to study for a doctorate
– Switzerland: licence/diplôme or master
– UK & Ireland: good honours degree (min. Upper Second); preference to those with a Master’s degree
– Latin American countries: licenciatura
– Other countries: diploma equivalent to the minimum qualification needed to study for a doctorate in a given country

Application Procedure: Department of Economics
* CV including a list and brief description of selected advance courses you took
* Degree transcript, preferably in English, issued by your university
* Do nor forget to provide the names of 3 academic referees (referees must submit the references directly to the EUI: ReferenceRes@eui.eu)

Application Procedure : Law, History and Civilization, Political and Social Sciences
* a one-page CV
* a research proposal of 4-5 pages in English or French
* a degree transcript, issued by your university
* do nor forget to provide the names of 2 academic referees (referees must submit the references directly to the EUI: ReferenceRes@eui.eu)
