8 scholarships in the 3-years Ph.D. Programme in Sociology and Methodology of Social Research (SOMET).

Scholarship amount: approx. 16.000 EUR gross per year, for three years.

The Ph.D. programme in Sociology and Methodology of Social Research is based at the University of Milan and jointly promoted by the following departments, members of NASP:

Department of Social and Political Sciences – SPS (University of Milan)
Department of Cultures, Politics and Societies – CPS (University of Turin)

The Ph.D. programme in Sociology has a longstanding tradition of excellence in Italy. The aim of the programme is to provide structured training in theoretically-guided empirical research across a wide range of sociological fields and to introduce students to current international debates in both qualitative and quantitative social research.

The course consists of a three-year programme. The first year is devoted to basic training, in conjunction with the activities of the NASP interdisciplinary Graduate School in Social and Political Sciences. The second year is partly spent in a relevant university department abroad and is devoted to the initial drafting of the thesis. The third year is entirely spent completing the thesis. All classes and teaching activities are in English.

Graduates will be able to compete successfully for positions as researchers (in public and private universities and research centers), skilled professionals and consultants in sociology to public agencies and international organizations and institutions in Italy and elsewhere in Europe.

Culture and consumption
Digital society and the media
Gender and sexuality
Migration studies, multicultural societies and citizenship
Science, technology, environment and urban studies
Social inequalities and socio-economic stratification
Social movements, collective action and civil society
Sociology of family
Sociology of health
Sociology of politics, public opinion and voting
Work and organizations

For each of these sociological areas/topics, the PhD Programme places particular emphasis on the integration of theory and methodology of research.

Eligibility

In order to apply for the Ph.D. Programme, applicants are required to possess either an Italian Laurea Magistrale, a Master’s Degree or any equivalent degree.

Applicants who expect to obtain an Italian Laurea Magistrale, a Master’s Degree or equivalent within October 31, 2020 are also eligible to apply for admission.

Benefits

The scholarship is approx. of 16.000 Euros gross per year (up to 3 years). A 50% increase of the scholarship is provided for visiting periods abroad. Starting from the second year, students are also awarded a research budget amounting up to 10% of the yearly scholarship.
