The Network for the Advancement of Social and Political Studies (NASP) is pleased to announce that its Ph.D. Programme in Sociology and Methodology of Social Research (SOMET) calls for application for 6 Ph.D. positions covered by scholarships (duration: 3 years).

The application deadline is May 17, 2019.

The Ph.D. programme in Sociology and Methodology of Social Research is administratively based at the University of Turin and is jointly promoted by the following departments, members of NASP:

  • Department of Social and Political Sciences – SPS (University of Milan);
  • Department of Cultures, Politics and Societies – CPS (University of Turin).

The Ph.D. programme in Sociology has a longstanding tradition of excellence in Italy. The aim of the programme is to provide structured training in theoretically-guided empirical research across a wide range of sociological fields and to introduce students to current international debates in both qualitative and quantitative social research.

The course consists of a three-year programme. The first year is devoted to basic training, in conjunction with the activities of the NASP interdisciplinary Graduate School in Social and Political Sciences. The second year is partly spent in a relevant university department abroad and is devoted to the initial drafting of the thesis. The third year is entirely spent completing the thesis. All classes and teaching activities are in English.

Graduates will be able to compete successfully for positions as researchers (in public and private universities and research centers), skilled professionals and consultants in sociology to public agencies and international organizations and institutions in Italy and elsewhere in Europe.

The research areas covered by the Ph.D. Programme include:

  • Culture and consumption;
  • Digital society and the media;
  • Gender and sexuality;
  • Migration studies, multicultural societies, and citizenship;
  • Science, technology, environment and urban studies;
  • Social inequalities and socio-economic stratification;
  • Social movements, collective action, and civil society;
  • Sociology of family;
  • Sociology of health;
  • Sociology of politics, public opinion, and voting;
  • Work and organizations.

For each of these sociological areas/topics, the Ph.D. Programme places particular emphasis on the integration of theory and methodology of research.

Eligibility

Applicants of any citizenship and age can participate to this Call for Admission, provided that they meet one of the following requirements:

  • A degree awarded by an Italian University prior to Ministerial Decree 509/99, i.e.​ laurea vecchio ordinamento​ ​(L) ;
  • A second level degree awarded by an Italian University (pursuant to Ministerial Decree 509/99 and Ministerial Decree 270/04, i.e. ​laurea magistrale (LM) or laurea specialistica (LS);
  • A Master’s degree level or ther equivalent academic qualification of second cycle level awarded by a foreign university and granting access to PhD studies.
  • Applicants whose degrees will be awarded after call deadline(17​thMay2019)​may apply under the condition that their qualification is obtained ​within 31 October  2019.
  • English language proficiency: at least level B2

Scholarship

  • 6 positions with scholarship, of which n.1 is reserved to candidates with international qualifications;
  • Scholarship of 16.350 EUR gross per year, renewable up to a maximum of three years.
