Description:

The UNESCO Global Media & Information Literacy Week Youth Hackathon 2024 is a unique opportunity for young people around the world to develop innovative solutions addressing the challenges posed by digital media and artificial intelligence. Under the theme “Youth Leading the Way – Media and Information Literacy and the New Digital Frontiers of Information”, participants will focus on creating projects that empower youth to shape the digital spaces they inhabit. The hackathon promotes digital literacy, encourages youth innovation, and facilitates global collaboration.

Participants will tackle issues such as promoting public interest information, addressing challenges posed by AI, enhancing media literacy through peer education, and empowering youth organizations to collaborate with digital content creators. Projects can take various forms, such as games, apps, podcasts, educational toolkit, or creative community interventions. The hackathon winners will present their projects at the UNESCO Global MIL Week Feature Conference on October 30-31, 2024.

Eligibility:

  • Teams of 3-6 members aged between 18 and 30 years.
  • Participants can be from any country, ensuring global inclusivity.
  • Gender parity within teams is required, and all participants must respect UNESCO’s core values.
  • Open to youth with no prior experience in media literacy or hackathons, making it accessible to a broad audience.

Benefits:

  • The international jury will award four winning teams. UNESCO will cover the travel and accommodation for two members of each winning team to come to Amman, Jordan, on 30-31 October, and present their project during the closing ceremony of the Global MIL Week Conference.

How to apply?

To apply, teams must submit a document presenting their solution and a 3-minute video pitch that includes:

  • Team composition.
  • Problem statement, objectives, and target audience.
  • Explanation of the proposed prototype.
  • Feasibility, sustainability, creativity, and deployment strategies.
