Description
BP is a global energy company with wide reach across the world’s energy system and has provided funding for 110 full scholarships. AFS Intercultural Programs is an international, voluntary, non-governmental, non-profit organization that provides intercultural learning opportunities to help people develop the knowledge, skills and understanding needed to create a more just and peaceful world. Both AFS and BP have partnered to host the BP Global STEM Academies, four-week programs in Brazil, Egypt, India, and the USA focusing on science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) and global competence education. The program culminates with team projects and presentations that offer potential solutions to real world challenges, with an emphasis on climate change and the energy transition.
Eligibility
In order to be accepted, participants must fulfill these eligibility criteria:
- Must be born between December 1, 2002 and June 1, 2005
- Has the ability to participate fully in a classroom and program conducted entirely in English
- Demonstrated interest in STEM, study abroad and interacting with different cultures
- Willingness to attend all four Academy destinations – Brazil, Egypt, India, or the USA
- Ability and willingness to travel unaccompanied abroad
- BP and AFS are committed to ensuring diversity of all kinds; a focus will be placed on engaging females and students with financial need
Benefits
The scholarship covers the AFS program fee, domestic and international airfares, visa costs (if necessary), government fees to obtain a passport (if needed), and all program costs, including meals and housing. Participants on the Egypt program will live with host families, participants in the USA program will live in a dormitory, and participants in the Brazil and India program will have a mixture of both. Depending on the location of your stay, scholarship winners will have the opportunity to explore famous research centers, work hands-on STEM activities both in the field and in laboratories on the topics of microbiology and water conservation, or meet with industry leaders and explore innovations in robotics and technology driven software at laboratories and different universities. All scholarship winners will have the opportunity to take language learning courses from any of the host countries.
