Central European University (CEU) is a “crossroads” university that is home to students and faculty members from some 100 countries. It was established in Budapest in 1991 in response to the revolutionary changes in Central and Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. Founder George Soros, the American-Hungarian financier and philanthropist, envisioned CEU as a source of intellectual support for building open and democratic societies that respect human rights and the rule of law. The University’s mission remains true to this original goal today.

CEU’s most distinctive features

CEU is a unique, multicultural university accredited in both the U.S, and Hungary. CEU offers high-quality graduate degree programs taught in English, addressing key issues of the 21st century. Central European University has just been listed among the Top 100 Universities for Social Sciences in the latest Times Higher Education rankings. Students and faculty come from over 100 countries. CEU is proud of its intellectual excellence as well as its outstanding 8:1 student/faculty ratio. During our seminar-style courses, we count on our proactive students. What’s next for CEU?

CEU is entering a new, very interesting phase in its history. We continue to broaden our academic offerings with such new programs as a two-year MA in International Relations, the Cultural Heritage Program, or a one-year MSc program in Business Analytics. On the brink of our 25th anniversary, CEU is hosting the Frontiers of Democracy Series, a far-reaching CEU initiative that aims to promote open debate and exchange of ideas about the nature of democracy today. We are also embarking on a campus redevelopment project which will benefit CEU and the surrounding community with an even more student-centered and modern campus.
