Description
Canon Collins Educational and Legal Assistance Trust is inviting application for Graça Machel Scholarships for Women. Scholarships are available for pursuing honours, masters and PhD study at South African universities. Funding for up to a maximum of one year for Honours, two years for Masters and three years for PhD. Scholarships are provided to learn of the courses offered by the South African universities.
Canon Collins Trust was founded in 1981 by the British Defence and Aid Fund for Southern Africa. Their vision was to equip South African and Namibian exiles with the skills and education denied to them by apartheid. The Trust now has an expanded range of charitable objectives, and they are committed to higher education; to public interest law, particularly on behalf of poor people; and to research into law and legal systems.
Eligibility
To apply for a scholarship under this programme candidates must be:
- Female;
- A national of (and normally resident in) one of the SADC countries: Angola, Botswana, DRC, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe;
- In possession of a good first degree (minimum second class, upper division or equivalent) or about to graduate in the year of application.
Scholarship
The scholarship covers full tuition fees, a stipend towards living costs, and a travel allowance. Awards in 2014 were as follows:
- tuition fees paid in full;
- stipend of ZAR 60,000 (ZAR 52,000 for nationals of South Africa); and
- travel allowance (for scholars coming to South Africa from other SADC countries only) of ZAR 7,000.
Application
The application process will close at 3 pm BST on 28 July 2014 for study commencing in 2015.
The mode of applying is online using the online application system. Candidates must apply to their chosen universities separately and awards are conditional on the applicant being offered a place at the relevant university.
