Deadline: 30 May 2014
Open to: candidates with MSc/PhD in remote sensing, geo-information science, geography, physics, computer science, environmental science or equivalent
Scholarship: €2,427 – €4,462 for Post-Doc, €2083- € 2664 for PhD per month

Description

The Faculty of Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation – ITC, University of  Twente, provides international postgraduate education, research and project services in the field of geo-information science and earth observation using remote sensing and GIS.

The STARS project expected to launch in June 2014, will be led by ITC, and involve research partner institutes from Australia, Mali, the United States and Mexico. The aim of the project is to improve our understanding of how remote sensing technology can contribute to transform smallholder farming in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia.

1. Post-doctoral position

The candidate will collaborate with an international team within the STARS project to set up field data acquisition standards and protocols, and to co-develop and analyze a spectro-temporal and textural cropping system library. Profound understandings of quantitative remote sensing methods for agricultural applications including multispectral and multitemporal image processing methods are the key assets that they are looking for. The candidate is also expected to co-develop the (public domain) spectral library with the partners.

Profile:

  • a PhD in remote sensing, geo-information science, geography, physics, computer science, environmental science or equivalent;
  • analytical mind;
  • experience with programming;
  • solid working knowledge of remote sensing for mapping and monitoring vegetation type and status as well as of GIS and statistics;
  • prior experience in the processing of very high spatial resolution satellite data and in the analysis of UAV imagery is desirable;
  • organizational and communication skills, and respect for project deadlines;
  • fluent in spoken and written, scientific English, and if possible, French.

The successful candidate will be employed for a period of 2 years. The gross monthly salary ranges from € 2427,- gross per month up to € 4462,- gross per month excluding allowances in accordance with the job profile ‘Onderzoeker-3’, under the University System for Job Classification (UJC).

2. PhD position

The candidate will conduct original research in the context of the STARS project, related to high and very high spatial resolution crop spectra, their evolution over time, and the spectrotemporal and textural analysis that arises from the need to understand crop type and crop development. We have a special interest in expertise in the domain of using multiscale data sources in this domain.

Profile:

  • MSc in remote sensing, geo-information science, geography, physics, computer science, environmental science or equivalent;
  • analytical mind;
  • experience with programming;
  • a solid working knowledge of quantitative remote sensing and GIS methods (including spatial data mining/machine learning and data assimilation);
  • experience with applications of remote sensing to vegetation monitoring will be beneficial;
  • fluent in English;
  • fluency with a publication (MSc thesis or other) as first author.

The successful candidate will be employed for a period of 4 years. The gross monthly salary starts at € 2083,- gross per month in the first year, leading up to € 2664,- gross per month in the last year excluding allowances in accordance with the job profile ‘Promovendus’, under the University System for Job Classification (UJC).
