Award: total amount of 200,000 South African Rand (approximately 13,600 Euro) divided in several categories

Description

The Eskom Energy Efficient Lighting Design Competition (EELDC) was founded in 1999. The key objective of this initiative is to introduce and entrench a culture of harmonious co-existence between design and energy efficiency in lighting. The competition includes four categories:

  • Category A: Residential Luminary Design for students;
  • Category B: Innovative Energy Efficient Lighting Design for professionals;
  • Category C: Most Promising Young Designer for learners;
  • Special Award: Most Promising Designer for amateur designers.

The goal of the competition is to demonstrate that efficient lighting technologies, such as discharge, fluorescent and LED technologies, can be used in very contemporary and attractive luminaries and lighting design systems intended for residential lighting. Criteria include creativeness, functionality, attractiveness, innovativeness, ingeniousness, and efficiency.

Eligibility

  • Category A: Full-time students at all tertiary institutions in South Africa (universities, colleges, design centres and schools of design);
  • Category B: Professional graphic designers, architects, electrical engineers, product designers, researchers and anyone with a passion for design are invited to submit innovative energy efficient designs, systems or products, suitable for residential application;
  • Category C: Promising young designers from secondary schools and FET or independent colleges, between the age of 14 and 20, are invited to submit innovative energy efficient designs, systems or products, suitable for residential application;
  • Special Award: Promising amateur PDI designer who submitted an energy efficient lighting design, system or product, suitable for residential application.

Awards

Category A:

  • First Prize: R30,000
  • Second Prize: R20,000
  • Third Prize: R10,000
  • Educational institution prize money: R10,000
  • Six top regional finalists: Lenovo 7” Android tablet

Category B:

  • First Prize: R40,000
  • Six top regional finalists: R5,000 each

Category C:

  • Most Promising Designer: R10,000
  •  Educational institute prize: R10,000
  • Six top regional finalist: Lenovo 7″ Android tablet

Special Award:

  • Most Promising Designer: R10,000

The closing date for entries is 17:00 (Central Africa Time) on the 15th of August 2014.
