Description
Google, in partnership with National Geographic, LEGO, Scientific American, Virgin Galactic and the Educator Organisations, has launched the Google Science Fair 2014, an online science competition seeking curious minds from the four corners of the globe.
Young scientists, from 13 to 18 years old, all over the world, are invited to join the fair and submit interesting, creative projects that are relevant to the world today. They can compete on their own or in a team of up to three persons. Entrants can submit projects in any one of the following categories:
- Computer Science & Math;
- Earth & Environmental Sciences;
- Behavioral & Social Sciences;
- Flora & Fauna;
- Energy & Space;
- Inventions & Innovation;
- Physics;
- Biology;
- Chemistry;
- Food Science;
- Electricity & Electronics.
There will be 90 Regional Finalists. 15 Finalists selected from the Regional Finalists will be flown to Mountain View California for a chance to compete to become a Finalist Winner (3 total) in their age category: 13-14; 15-16; and 17-18. One of the 3 Finalists Winners will be selected as the Grand Prize Winner.
Eligibility
Competition is open to individuals born between 13 February 1995 and 12 May 2001 (inclusive), except for:
- Netherlands’ applicants that must be born between 13 February 1995 and 12 May 1998 (inclusive);
- Applicants from Spain, South Korea and Israel that must be born between 13 February 1995 and 12 May 2000 (inclusive).
All entrants who are not full of age must have their parents’ or legal guardian’s permission to enter the competition.
Prize
The One Grand Prize Winner will receive for a total of US$90,000:
- A National Geographic Expedition to the Galapagos Islands;
- A Scholarship from Google;
- A Once in a Lifetime Experience by LEGO EDUCATION/NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC/GOOGLE;
- A personalised LEGO Prize;
- Digital Access to Scientific American Archives for his/her school.
- A Virgin Galactic experience.
For other winners there will be scholarships and interesting prizes, like:
- Science in Action: will honour a project that can make a practical difference by addressing an environmental, health or resources problem.
- Celebrate the School: will recognise the amazing contribution made by the teachers of the winners by awarding cash grants.
- Local Award: will celebrate projects that receive a mark of excellence during preliminary judging and that attempt to address a locally relevant issue. The winners will be awarded a prize valued at $1,000 by Google, to help further their project and education.
- Computer Science Award: celebrates a project which has the potential to change the world, through outstanding and innovative work in the field of computer science The winner will be awarded $25,000 in funding by Google, to help develop their project and a year’s worth of mentoring.
- Voters Choice Award: will be decided by public vote. The winner will receive a $10,000 grant from Google to help develop their project.
Application
First of all, applicants must have or create a free Google Account. In order to submit their projects, they should register, either as an Entrant, Team Leader or Team Member. Submissions should contain a brief overview of their project (subject, stages, achievements, etc.) and a video (with a maximum length of 2 minutes) or a slideshow (with a maximum of 20 slides).
Submissions may be submitted in one of the following languages: English, German, Italian, Spanish, French, Arabic, Hebrew, Polish, Japanese, Russian, Turkish, Portuguese, Korean, or Chinese (simplified or traditional). However, entries can be submitted in any language if an English translation/script is provided. For more information, check the FAQ section.
