EU Criminal Law and Protection of Victims Course in Dubrovnik, Croatia

Description

The main objective of this course is to transfer advanced knowledge and understanding of the EU Substantive Criminal Law and Protection of Victims. The course lecturers will be addressing the topics of the EU substantive criminal law in general, the approximation of laws and regulations of the Member states in the areas of trafficking in human beings and sexual exploitation of women and children, terrorism, illicit drug trafficking, protection of financial interests of the EU, money laundering, corruption and organized crime, protection of victims within the EU. In addition, students will get acquainted with the documents of the Council of Europe in the mentioned areas. That will enable them to compare different levels of protection and the interaction between Council of Europe and European Union in the field of substantive criminal law and protection of victims. Throughout the course, attention will be paid to comparative legislation and case law of the ECHR and ECJ.

Eligibility

The course will not be restricted to law students only, but will be offered to students of political sciences, social work studies, education and rehabilitation, police academy, etc., as well as members of the NGO sector. There are three possibilities to obtain a scholarship where different eligibility criteria apply (see below).

Costs

Inter-University Centre (IUC) has some options for supporting participants who attend IUC programmes:

1. Scholarships of the Croatian Ministry of Science, Education and Sports: Three scholarships per course are available for citizens of Croatia for participation as lecturers or as postgraduate students in IUC courses. Generally, one and the same individual may receive one scholarship per year. Scholarships cover travel expenses within Croatia and half board accommodation during the course period. The IUC Secretariat pays the economy airline fare directly to Croatia Airlines or refunds the amount of a paid ticked to the participant. Hotel reservations are made by the agency Gulliver or exceptionally by the IUC Secretariat. Hotel expenses are paid directly by the IUC Secretariat.

2. Open Society Institute / Higher Education Support Programme: Scholarships may be obtained by participants from Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Kyrgyzstan, Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Republic of Georgia, Russia, Serbia, and Ukraine. Exceptionally, one scholarship per course may be granted for lecturers coming from the countries mentioned. Scholarships may be granted to PhD students or to young faculty members under the age of 40 who are studying or working in fields of humanities and social sciences. Scholarships cover costs of hotel accommodation (half board) in Dubrovnik. Exceptionally, a limited number of participants from Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Kosovo, Kyrgyzstan, Macedonia, Moldova, Republic of Georgia, Russia, and Ukraine may receive partial compensation of travel expenses. This does not apply for students studying in EU or other western universities.

3. Other national or institutional foundations supporting educational programmes: Such are the Visiting Researcher Programme for Australian academics and the Official Austrian grants database. For certain events for students or teachers from Germany support may be available from DAAD.

However, besides these scholarship options, IUC encourages participants to explore possibilities of finding support for international educational programmes at their home institutions, at international co-operation offices or local foundations. The IUC Secretariat will offer documents needed to facilitate the receipt of the grant.

  • Applications for the Society Institute / Higher Education Support Programme Scholarship, must be made on a special HESP form and submitted to the IUC Secretariat to the e-mail address nada.bruer@iuc.hr.

Send the documents at least one month before the start of the particular course (21 March 2014 at latest).
