Designpreis Halle International Design Competition

Deadline: 31 January 2014
Open to: designers and design students under 40 years old from all over the world
Award: prize money of altogether Eur 10,000

Description

The aim of Designpreis Halle is to bring together economy and design and to sharpen the senses for excellent design. It also aims to offer an incentive for young designers to seek competition and to present their works to a wider audience. Designpreis Halle is being tendered by Designpreis Halle every three years and is awarded together with the City of Halle, the region‘s economic partners and Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design Halle. Awards are made for design products, ideas and concepts of outstanding quality. The winners are selected by an expert jury.

Another speciality of this international award is that a new topic is introduced each time. A historic building that bears reference to this topic is chosen as a venue for the exhibition and the presentation of the nominated competition entries, providing an extraordinary setting for the award ceremony, too. In 2014, the chosen topic is water.

Water is our most important aliment and as such, it is getting worryingly scarce. It can also serve as a means of traffic and transport, for bodily hygiene, the preparation of food, for energy production, it offers recreation and pleasure and much more. It is, moreover, a very attractive and sensuous material. As a topic, it is of high current and global significance; therefore, it can raise a multitude of ecological, economic, ethic and social questions and can lead to the most different applications but also to theoretical and socio-cultural questions.

The name is a declaration of commitment to Halle. It aims to raise the city‘s profile as a varied and innovative economic and scientific place. As an ambassador for the city‘s creative potential, Designpreis wants to show that Halle, which is home to a large creative scene, is also attractive for young fresh ideas from all over the world.

The registered society Designpreis Halle was founded after the enormously successful premiere of Designpreis Halle in 2007, which attracted some 19,000 visitors.

Designpreis Halle is looking for designs that examine the topic in an intense and creative manner – be it product-oriented or process-oriented. It may include inventing new services or suggesting innovative applications or user strategies but also designing products that address our treatment of water as a resource or examine the sensual qualities of water as a material.
